Coatings: The skin of plastic matter
By Adolfo Benedito
In a risky analogy, we might say that coatings in plastics play the role of human skin. The first bastion defending the material, coatings are an added value that aim to both protect from the outside and to provide the material with unique and exclusive functionalities. Plastics and their coatings belong, therefore, to a complex and unique system with significantly enhanced properties compared to the original material.

Radar absorbing composites reinforced with barium hexaferrite powder
SPE Plastics Research Online
Radar is an object-detection system that uses electromagnetic waves to identify the range, altitude, direction, and speed of objects. A strategy for disguising objects from radar detection involves applying a coating of radar absorbing material. The earliest forms of radar absorbing materials, called "Sumpf" and "Schornsteinfeger," were developed during World War II for periscopes on German submarines. The materials had a layered structure based on graphite particles and other semiconductive materials embedded in a rubber matrix.

European plastics 'set to change'
Recycling International
The odds for plastics recycling in Europe are slowly but surely improving, with an average of 26 percent of plastic waste recycled across the continent. "Also, we know there is already a plan to implement a landfill ban in Poland. So, even in countries like that, things are set to change," said Martin Engelman, Plastics Europe's resource efficiency director at this year's edition of Identiplast.
Converting recycled plastics into disease-fighting nanofibers
Phys.Org
Researchers from IBM and the Institute of Bioengineering and Nanotechnology have made a nanomedicine breakthrough in which they converted common plastic materials like polyethylene terephthalate into non-toxic and biocompatible materials designed to specifically target and attack fungal infections. This research was published recently in the peer-reviewed journal, Nature Communications.

Are plastics the new natural gas?
News@Northeastern
Yiannis Levendis, Distinguished Professor Mechanical and Industrial Engineering at Northeastern, keeps a photograph of a burning plastic foam cup tacked to the wall above his desk. Thick black smoke emanates from the receptacle, which, subsequent pictures reveal, was reduced to a sooty powder by the end of the combustion process. The photo represents a mission for Levendis, whose expertise in combustion and device design has led to the development of dozens of clean energy products.
