Activity in China's factory sector contracted in January for the first time in six months, a preliminary survey showed recently, pointing to a weak start for the economy in 2014 as policymakers seek to curb high debt levels to head off financial risks.

Cotton topsheet developed for diapers

The world is one step closer to seeing a diaper with a cotton component. Cotton maker TJ Beall and Huntsman Textile Effects have developed a diaper topsheet made from hydroentangled apertured spunlaced nonwoven material. The substrate, featuring TJ Beall's True Cotton brand of unbleached (griege) cotton treated with Huntsman's Ultraphil CO additive, outperformed polypropylene spunbond nonwovens.

Simon, chief executive of Wal-Mart for the United States, said the company was providing a $10 million fund to promote American manufacturing in a public push to sell more American-made products. The fund, to be distributed over five years, will award grants for new manufacturing processes and help to encourage such projects in this country, a company spokeswoman said.

Executive vice president resigns from Ahlstrom
Nonwovens Industry
Laura Raitio, executive vice president, building and energy business area, has resigned from Ahlstrom Corporation at her own request. Raitio joined Ahlstrom in 1990 and has been a member of the executive management team since 2006. She will continue to work at Ahlstrom until her departure at the end of July 2014. Her successor has not been named.

Few topics have been more fraught than the fate of U.S. manufacturing. The sharp loss of manufacturing jobs since 2008 has triggered legitimate concern that America's best days may have passed. Even as recent leading indicators suggest more economic momentum, job growth remains at best sluggish and manufacturing has seen only marginal gains — having shed more than 2 million jobs in 2008-2009, and millions more since the peak in the late 1970s.

100,000 ton BDO plant in the cards

BioAmber has signed a take-or-pay contract for bio-based 1,4-Butanediol (BDO) with Vinmar International. Under the terms of the 15-year agreement, Vinmar has committed to purchase 100 percent of the BDO produced in a 100,000 ton-per-year capacity plant that BioAmber plans to build in North America and commission in 2017.
