Austin American-Statesman    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Last summer, Trey Masek had a tough decision to make. Football season was only a few months away, and Giddings—with 12 starters back—was poised to contend for a state championship. And Masek—the quarterback who had rushed for 631 yards and accounted for 10 touchdowns during the Buffaloes' five-game run in the 2008 playoffs—was expected to lead them. But he never stepped onto the football field last fall. Masek, who had committed to play baseball for Texas Tech in the spring, decided to concentrate on baseball in his senior year and not play football. "It was pretty tough," Masek said. "It was probably the toughest decision I've ever made." But the decision paid off. More

Playoff changes meet 1A, 2A football coaches' favor
Waco Tribune-Herald    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The outcry among football coaches was nearly unanimous this winter. Among various quibbles about district movements during the University Interscholastic League's February biennial realignment, Class 1A and 2A coaches felt jilted by the system’s new playoff format. Instead of splitting teams into small school and big school divisions at the start of the playoffs, 1A and 2A teams were split before the season. That way teams knew where they were headed in their respective playoff brackets before the first snap. But only two teams would advance to the playoffs from each district. That decision left a number of coaches scratching their heads More
