Things to know about the 2010 Coaching School and Convention

We are very excited to be back in San Antonio this year. The City of San Antonio and Trinity University have embraced our convention and will be providing us with great venues for all the activities that will be taking place, July 18 through July 21. This year will be the 78th Annual Convention of the Texas High School Coaches Association as we celebrate the 80th and anniversary of the Coaches Association. More



The Woodlands, Friendswood win UIL's Lone Star Cup

For the second straight year, The Woodlands and Friendswood stood tallest in the University Interscholastic League. The two high schools were named the UIL's Class 5A and Class 4A Lone Star Cup winners for the 2009-10 school year. The Lone Star Cup recognizes high schools based on their overall team achievement in athletic and academic championships. All UIL member high schools in good standing are included for contention for the UIL Lone Star Cup. More

Central Texas teams set for state passing tournament

Twelve Austin-area schools will be looking to win a state championship this week as the state passing tournament gets underway in College Station. Two of the Division I tournamen's last three champions have hailed from Central Texas as Georgetown won the tournament in 2007 and Stony Point was last year's winner. The small schools will open up the Division II tournament on Thursday and will conclude play on Friday. The upper-classification schools will start on Friday and finish on Saturday. More

Resiliency defines San Antonio high school icon Pasterchick

When longtime high school football coach George Pasterchick suffered a head injury in a sideline accident two weeks before his 79th birthday last year, a San Antonio Express-News columnist thought the worst. He feared that Pasterchick, who coached at St. Gerard for 34 years before "retiring" in 2006, never would be the same man who has been such a positive influence on scores of young lives. Considering he has written about Pasterchick since the late 1970s, when he already was synonymous with his beloved St. Gerard Royals, he should have known better than to count him out. More

Sweat, shared gear and playing surfaces, coupled with the erratic personal hygiene of adolescents, have combined to ramp up the risk from skin infections in sports at the high school and college level. Fort Worth Dunbar product Chris Roberts had several breathtaking plays in his two years at Bradley. He made ESPN SportsCenter's top-10 plays three times in a nine-day span during the 2009 CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament. In that tournament, Roberts banked in a 75-foot heave at the buzzer to lift Bradley over Oakland in the second round, which is believed to be the longest game-winning shot in NCAA Division I postseason history. Later he had a pair of alley-oop dunks against Pacific and Old Dominion that made the highlight reel. Now, Roberts has a chance for even more eye-opening moves and tricks, He was one of six players selected Tuesday in the Harlem Globetrotters' 2010 draft. More

Green, Taillon selected as Chronicle Players of the Year

No matter where you put him, Tyler Green caused plenty of problems for opponents this season. The Brazoswood senior pitcher and middle infielder was one of the area's most dangerous and productive hitters, with a .500 average, a .925 slugging percentage, 11 home runs, 46 RBIs and 15 stolen bases. On the mound, he sported a 10-1 record, a miniscule 0.93 ERA and struck out 108 batters in 752⁄3 innings. He helped Brazoswood to a 33-7 record and was a large part in each of the Bucs' deep playoff runs the last two seasons. More

Wilkins to be recommended for West Orange-Stark basketball job

Evadale boys basketball coach Jason Wilkins will be recommended to take the same position at West Orange-Stark, the district said. Bill Conway, who is the interim West Orange-Cove CISD superintendent, said Wilkins will be presented at a July 19 school board meeting. Wilkins replaces Don Newton, who left WO-S after one season to become the head boys basketball coach at Class 4A Corisicana. More
