Class 6A talk a hot topic at the THSCA Convention

Biennial reclassification and realignment was a hot topic at the University Interscholastic League's annual address at the 78th annual Texas High School Coaches Association Convention and Coaching School. UIL executive director Charles Breithaupt said many ideas have been brought to the organization's attention, including expanding from five to six conferences in all sports. More



North cruises to 113-95 victory in THSCA all-star hoops contest

For the second consecutive year, a team of basketball all-stars from Regions I and II defeated a team representing Regions III and IV, as the North defeated that South, 113-95, in the 66th annual Texas High School Coaches Association All-Star Basketball Game at St. Mary's University in San Antonio on Monday night. More

Royal-Memorial Stadium qualifies as an ideal location for future high school football state championship games, according to the man whose teams best know the stadium. Texas football coach Mack Brown has made a pitch to have high school state title games on campus, and University Interscholastic League officials said Austin will be considered as a potential site. The issue of championship venues arose during a discussion about the Class 5A, 4A and 3A title games of 2010 being played at the new Cowboys Stadium in Arlington. More

Football helmets improving, but number of concussions not dropping

Dr. Paul Saenz, a sports-medicine specialist who often lectures at the THSCA coaching school, talked to coaches today about how improved helmets have shown a "decrease in the biomechanical forces that are absorbed by the skull." But, he said, the newer helmets have not shown a decrease in the amount of concussions. More



Rule to coach Clark boys soccer

Walter Rule has been named the boys soccer coach at Clark. Rule, who coached the school's girls team the past three seasons, replaced Eddie Ashley, who resigned to become an assistant principal at Boerne Champion after leading Clark to a 21-2-2 record and a berth into the Region IV-5A championship game this past season. More

By the time he headed down to Austin to watch his dad coach the Texas High School Coaches Association All-Star Game last year, Trevor Owens had already racked up almost every accolade a high school football player can earn individually. But something about the THSCA All-Star Game gave Owens a new goal. Owens, a two-time All-State defensive end at Monahans who racked up 21 sacks the last two seasons, wanted to earn a spot in the THSCA All-Star Game. More

Slaton won only five baseball games this spring, and it finished seventh in its eight-team district. But Randy Gattis sees plenty of potential in the Tigers' program, so he's decided to lead it. Gattis, who guided Lubbock Christian High to undefeated district championships in both of his seasons as head coach, will assume the same role at Slaton, where he was officially hired on Tuesday night.
