Obesity plays a significant role in many gastrointestinal-related disorders, including GERD, colon cancer and pancreatic diseases. Yet, it remains one of the least treated diseases in clinical practice. To help combat obesity, researchers and clinicians are needed at the 2018 James W. Freston Conference to discuss current and emerging therapies, and areas of further need in obesity care and research.
POWER Roundtable Lunch
Immediately following the Freston conference, clinicians can discuss challenges and opportunities in obesity care and learn how to set up a successful obesity service line. To participate, sign up when you register for the Freston conference.

Closing June 1: Call for Papers — 6th Annual Obesity Journal Symposium at ObesityWeek 2018
|
    |
TOS
The Editors of Obesity want your best research for the 6th annual Obesity Journal Symposium, which will be held during ObesityWeek 2018 on November 11-15, 2018, in Nashville, Tennessee. The Symposium and the accompanying special section of Obesity are designed to showcase the journal’s top papers that provide important insights into preventing and treating obesity.
The authors of the winning papers will give oral presentations during the Symposium, and their papers will be published online on the date of the event, with advance promotion to media and the research community. In addition, a special section at the front of the December 2018 issue will be reserved for these papers.
The presenting authors will also receive complimentary ObesityWeek registration. In addition, for all submissions that are accepted by the journal but not chosen as winners, the journal is offering immediate online publication.
Investigators planning to submit an abstract for ObesityWeek are also encouraged to submit their full paper for the Symposium in order to bring even greater visibility to their work. State-of-the art research on the mechanisms of energy balance, innovative clinical or translational studies that challenge current paradigms, and novel “proof of concept” papers are particularly sought.
How to Submit
Entries are now being accepted through the journal's online manuscript submission system. All papers must be received for consideration by June 1, and the winners will be announced this summer.

Obesity Research Spotlight — Mitochondrial Respiration is Associated with Lower Energy Expenditure and Lower Aerobic Capacity in African American Women
|
    |
Rod Velliquette, PhD
The prevalence of obesity and associated metabolic diseases varies greatly across different ethnicities, and reason for these differences have yet to be completely understood. Specifically, lower total and resting energy expenditure (REE), and aerobic fitness have been reported for African American women (AAW) compared to and Caucasian women (CW). In the May issue of Obesity, Toledo, F.G.S et al., reported their findings that provide additional insights into potential biological factors contributing to these differences. The researchers hypothesized that differences in mitochondria functional characteristics play a role in the lower energy expenditure and aerobic fitness in AWW.
Twenty-two young (18-36 years) AAW and 22 CW without obesity who were matched for BMI, body weight and age underwent an overnight inpatient stay where body composition, energy expenditure, insulin sensitivity and aerobic fitness were measured, and muscle biopsies taken. Energy expenditure and the change in REE during a hyperinsulinemic-euglycemic clamp, and aerobic fitness were significantly lower in AAW. However, these differences were no longer present after adjusting for skeletal muscle mitochondria respiration. Read the full article here.
June 13 Save the Date: The Current Understanding of Pre-Pregnancy Weight, Gestational Weight Gain, and the Impacts on Maternal and Child Health Among Women with Obesity: A Virtual Workshop (Webinar)
|
    |
The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine
Obesity affects many adult women, children, and adolescents in the United States. In 2009, the Institute of Medicine and the National Research Council published Weight Gain During Pregnancy: Reexamining the Guidelines, which established modified recommendations for gestational weight gain that incorporate pre-pregnancy BMI. The modified guidelines recommended that women with BMIs greater than or equal to 30 limit their weight gain during pregnancy to 11-20 pounds. However, exceeding these recommendations is common among U.S. women.
This virtual workshop (webinar) will serve to inform attendees about the current understanding regarding pre-pregnancy weight, gestational weight gain, and the effects of gestational weight gain on maternal and child health. It will build on previous topics covered by the Roundtable and the Academies by focusing on updates since the 2009 NRC/IOM report.
Join us on Wednesday, June 13, at 12 PM ET for this one-hour event to hear from our guest speakers:
Lisa Bodnar, University of Pittsburgh
Anna Maria Siega-Riz, University of Virginia
Jamie Stang, University of Minnesota
Naomi Stotland, University of California, San Francisco
