USFWS proposes listing African lion as threatened
Lone Star Outdoor News
Following a review of the best available scientific information, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has proposed listing the African lion as threatened under the Endangered Species Act. The agency rejected the claim that the African lion merited listing as an endangered species under the ESA. After a long and comprehensive review of the species status, which included information from the foremost lion researchers in the world, the FWS concluded that the African lion simply is not on the brink of extinction, but does face long-term threats to its survival.

Choosing your deer rifle is personal
Brownwood Bulletin
If someone outside the hunting fraternity were to ask, “what is the best caliber for a deer hunting rifle?,” he would perhaps get a different answer from each person he surveyed. Washington's I-594 represents a flawed attempt at gun control
By John McAdams
The upcoming election is shaping up to be an important one for gun owners in Washington state with an important measure on the ballot: Initiative 594, or I-594. Supporters of the law tout it as a simple, common-sense law requiring universal background checks for all firearm sales, but the law as written is actually nothing of the sort. In reality, I-594 is actually an extremely complicated regulation that will invade the privacy of law-abiding firearm owners, divert police resources from other tasks and do little to actually prevent criminals from obtaining firearms.

Zoom function makes its way to the rifle scope
When an Army Special Forces officer-turned engineer puts his mind to designing a military riflescope, he doesn’t forget the importance of creating something for the soldiers who will carry it that is easy to use, extremely accurate, light-weight and has long-lasting battery power. Sandia National Laboratories optical engineer Brett Bagwell led the development of the Rapid Adaptive Zoom for Assault Rifles (RAZAR) prototype. At the push of a button, RAZAR can toggle between high and low magnifications, enabling soldiers to zoom in without having to remove their eyes from their targets or their hands from their rifles.

A cooler and damper than usual summer upgraded the forecast following a dry spring, said Alan Cain, TPWD’s white-tailed deer program leader. He said that an abundance of natural foods enhanced by October rains could create slow hunting during early November.
