Competing open carry bills could lead to fireworks in 2015
Teaching class inside his Austin gun store, Central Texas Gun Works owner and instructor Michael Cargill regularly walks applicants through the process of becoming licensed to carry a concealed handgun. "The current law in the state of Texas, you have to take a class," Cargill explained. "It's four to six hours. You also have to pass a background check. You can have no felony convictions, no class A or B misdemeanor convictions in the last five years."

Texas hunting club may cancel endangered rhino hunt
CBS News
A Texas hunting club that auctioned off a permit to shoot an endangered black rhinoceros in Africa said it will cancel the hunt if a federal agency denies the winning bidder's request to bring the dead animal back to the U.S. as a trophy. Corey Knowlton bid $350,000 at a January auction that the Dallas Safari Club billed as a fundraising effort to save the endangered species. Last spring, he applied for a permit from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service that would enable him to import the rhino's body following the hunt in Namibia. But he's still waiting to hear back.

East Texas state rep proposes bill allowing open carry for prosecutors
When the Texas Legislature meets for the 84th time next January, they will consider a bill that would allow prosecutors to openly carry firearms for protection. Right now, prosecutors are allowed to carry a concealed weapon to work. If this bill passes, it would give prosecutors a choice to open carry. One East Texas legislator wants to change courthouse security after the 2013 murders of two Kaufman County prosecutors.

The new Umarex Octane pellet rifle shoots .22 caliber pellets at rimfire speeds with the ReAxis gas piston. These air rifles use the SilencAir system to reduce muzzle noise. Rimfire costs 4x as much as pellets and rimfire availability is still problematic.

World class Atascosa County buck taken
Lone Star Outdoor News
A buck killed Nov. 18 in Atascosa County near Poteet just might be one of the biggest free-range bucks killed in Texas this year — and possibly the biggest free-range buck ever taken in Atascosa County. Sixty-nine year old hunter Larry Bartek had seen the buck last year on his 300 acres, and knew neighbors around him were also hunting the big deer. “I knew he was on my place and I hunted him almost everyday since the beginning of the season,” Bartek said. “Yesterday morning, I had six does and a yearling behind the feeder and one of the does began to get really nervous. Then she crouched down and I thought, ‘it’s either a pig or a buck.’ Well, I’ll be, here he came.”

Border Patrol running short of rifles due to maintenance issues
A large portion of the U.S. Border Patrol’s inventory of 16,300 M4 rifles have been pulled from service after inspectors found many to be unserviceable. The news came as reports surfaced of agents stationed across the Southwestern border with Mexico having to pool rifles following a series of bad inspections, or worse, go without during a time of increased tensions along the international boundary.

Longview breaks ground for new gun range
Longview’s newest gun range has already broken ground and is set to open up next month. The co-owner of Top Shot Indoor Range and Guns, Jeffrey Davis, says there has been a lot to do to prepare for this and he is anticipating the grand opening of this 7,000 square foot, eight-lane shooting range. The gun range will feature a retail area for guns, ammunition and accessories. The facility will include classrooms for the fire arms safety courses that will be offered. The aspect that sets this gun range apart from others, is the ability to test out a weapon before purchasing it, Davis said of his new business.

Are Texas gun range regulations strong enough?
How close is too close when a gun range is moving in next door? There's a new one coming in western Smith County and some of the neighbors are worried it could be a disaster. Construction has already started. The bulldozers and the dump trucks are moving hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of dirt. The project is a little behind schedule, but the bigger problem is next door.

The best .17-caliber rifles available today
Rifle Shooter
Seventeen-caliber rifles are just a little bit magic. They shoot whisper-tiny projectiles the same diameter as the BBs we all loved to pop away with as kids. They produce almost no discernable recoil. Even the report of most .17-caliber guns is mild, particularly that of rimfire versions. Yet the little pills zipped downrange from .17-caliber rifles shoot with lazer-like flatness and produce surprisingly impressive results on small game and predators.
