Survey Shows Air Travelers Unhappy
With Security Checkpoints

A new survey reveals three in four air travelers believe there has to be a better way to conduct air travel security screening. The Consensus Research Group which conducted the survey for the U.S. Travel Association also said eight in 10 support a trusted traveler program that would provide alternative screening measures for American citizens who submit to a background check and meet other risk criteria.

Frustrated with intrusive searches and the time it takes to clear airport security checkpoints, frequent fliers and business travelers are asking the federal government to expand a "trusted traveler" program used at two U.S. airports. From business organizations to travel industry professionals and leisure fliers, opposition is mounting to the Transportation Security Administration's full-body scanners and enhanced pat-down procedures at airports, officials said.

The U.S. Travel Association recently applauded Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Commissioner Alan Bersin for his public comments calling for increased participation in trusted traveler programs as a way to thwart terror threats. In comments to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, Bersin said that CBP wants to increase enrollment in trusted traveler programs to 3.5 million people in two to three years. Such an increase, said Bersin, would allow CBP inspectors "to spend time on those travelers about whom we do not have a level of confidence" and hasten movement through the line for other travelers.

"The TSA has grown too big and we're unhappy with the way it's doing things," said Larry Dale, president of Orlando Sanford International Airport. "My board is sold on the fact that the free enterprise system works well and that we should go with a private company we can hold directly accountable for security and customer satisfaction."

Napolitano Circumspect on Israeli Air Tips for US

U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano played down prospects of adopting Israeli-style aviation security in response to protests at intrusive patdowns and screenings at American airports. Visiting Israel to assess its streamlined and sometimes controversial system, Napolitano defended her administration's measures as appropriate to the scale and legal requirements of U.S. air travel, and said they were gaining public support.
Higher Prices Predicted at Gas Pump

Drivers in the U.S. could be paying as much as $3.75 a gallon for gas this spring, oil experts predict.
Prices at the gas pump have inched up all year as the cost of crude oil neared $100 a barrel. On Christmas Day, the average nationwide price of self-serve regular hit $3, a record for that day. By year's end, the average price reached $3.06.
