Selling America abroad

US looks to foreign tourism to add jobs, revenue

President Barack Obama is trying to take advantage of what's quickly becoming the country's largest service export: international tourists. With overseas visitors pumping $153 billion into the U.S. economy last year — an increase of $19 billion that Commerce Department figures show put it ahead of the combined benefits of the new trade pacts signed with South Korea, Colombia and Panama — the administration has launched a task force to issue more travel visas to Brazil and China, among other developing countries. U.S. Travel Association launches 20,000-mile 'Vote Travel' bus tour

Travel advocates will gain an important and creative tool to engage elected officials in cities and states throughout the country — informing them about the economic power of the travel industry — with the U.S. Travel Association's newly launched nationwide bus tour. The 2012 "Vote Travel" campaign will cover 20,000 miles and incorporate major rallies in selected cities, as well as meetings with local elected officials and travel industry leaders, U.S. Travel reports. Schumer legislation would add Poland to Visa Waiver Program

Schumer, D-N.Y., said he's seeking a legislative solution to a problem that has bedeviled would-be visitors to the United States from Poland: a requirement that they get a visa before entry. Poland is the only country in the 25-nation Eurozone that does not already qualify for the U.S. Visa Waiver Program, and Polish diplomats for years have been pressing their American counterparts to allow their nation to qualify.
