MESSAGE FROM WERC
Members in the News
WERC member Richard Sharpe, president of Competitive Logistics, an Atlanta-based consultancy, writes a blog for DC Velocity about the phenomena of "big data" and how it will shape decision making within supply chain management. In the blog titled "Big Data, Big Deal," Sharpe focuses on how companies can harness and master the overwhelming flow of information to build profits and gain sustainable competitive advantage. "We often hear the argument that, 'Our company has a long way to go to even manage the data we have today,'" he said. "But taking advantage of advances in technology and methodologies to gain actionable insights from big data will drive significant competitive advantage."

  • Is the aging workforce really creating your skill shortages?
    Harvard Business Review
David DeLong writes, "Many executives today worry that skill shortages threaten their organization's ability to grow and innovate. A recent survey I designed for one manufacturing sector found that almost 60 percent of managers responding thought skill shortages were already hurting their firm's productivity and quality. These numbers have been supported in other studies. But, despite a seriously aging population in the U.S. and the rest of the industrialized world, only 4 percent of this same group saw the aging workforce as an immediate threat to performance."

Study: Women employees suffer more in workplaces with gender inequality
    By Tim Stroud
According to a recent study, female employees have a higher incidence of psychological distress than their male colleagues in workplaces where there are more men than women. The study monitored the psychological distress and well-being levels of 715 workers, taking into account the gender ratios within each specific workplace. The research begs the question: Would workplaces with a higher level of gender inequality benefit from an employee assistance program/plan?
