  • Latest trends in logistics point toward automation
    By Nadine Miller
Local and global logistics have become increasingly complex, and the systems needed to handle that complexity have also grown. More and more companies depend on third-party logistics providers to offer the data analysis and warehouse, transportation and financial management systems needed to keep products flowing smoothly from manufacturer to consumer. In 2013, companies implemented more automation in both hardware and software to increase productivity and reduce error rates. The trend toward automation will continue in 2014.

    Sustainability and your lift truck
    Modern Materials Handling
When gas prices doubled between 2002 and 2005, sales of large SUVs plummeted and were replaced with the likes of the Toyota Prius. Similarly, when the Great Recession barreled through the materials handling industry, companies scrutinized cost centers once assumed to be fixed aspects of doing business and found a number of operational efficiencies. But even as the economy takes a turn for the better, best practices in operational sustainability are becoming ingrained in business cultures; the industry won't be going back to the inefficient SUV approach any time soon.

Intersport expects RFID to boost its sales, decrease its costs
    RFID Journal
Intersport Jan Bols, an athletic equipment and clothing store located in Hoogeveen, the Netherlands, reports that it has boosted sales and decreased inventory-tracking costs via a radio frequency identification solution that tracks approximately 10,000 items storewide, from the back room to the point of sale. Based on the results of a two-month pilot at that store, Intersport International Corp., based in Switzerland, is now deploying the technology at 10 additional Intersport locations throughout the Netherlands.

The crucial career choices we make every day
    By Mike Wokasch
Many of us are in a work routine where we get up, go to work, do our job and go home. We do this without realizing that every day we make two choices that affect our job performance, career opportunities and compensation. These choices also have deeper rooted personal and job satisfaction implications that will become obvious from this discussion. If this is you, watch out. This level of comfort and confidence breeds complacency, can undermine your career and leave you vulnerable. You see, it's easier to rationalize complacency from a position of performance excellence.

Leadership is not a solitary task
    Harvard Business Review
We often think of leadership as a solitary task. Buying into Thomas Carlyle's "great man" theory of history, we speak of leadership in solitary and personal terms. And certainly, history is filled with examples of men and women like Trocmé, Rosa Parks, Nelson Mandela, and Mother Theresa who took bold individual action. But most real change — even the change driven by those aforementioned leaders — is community-driven and community-focused.

Talent is the future of supply chain management
    Modern Materials Handling
Bob Trebilcock writes, "You would think that issues like cost reductions, customer service levels and fuel prices would top the list of things that keeps distribution, transportation and supply chain managers up at night. After all, those are the items by which we are most often measured when bonuses are handed out. But at every industry conference I have attended in the last year, the paucity of talent has been topic No. 1."
