Lift truck makers seeing big picture
Material Flows    Share   Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
When most material handling and logistics managers see underutilized warehouse space, their first instinct might be to focus on the racking. But sometimes the answer to a storage problem isn't found in the most obvious place. For many warehousing problems, Jim Moran usually looks at lift trucks first. That's understandable, considering he's senior vice president of Crown Equipment. But he made a convincing case for his approach when his company recently introduced a new order picker to the market. Crown's new RM 6000 was unveiled as industry's first narrow aisle reach truck with a MonoLift mast and the first pantograph reach truck that can reach 505 inches and deliver up to 1,000 pounds more capacity at height. In supply chain world, smart phones are taking care of business
DC Velocity    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Smart phones are all the rage with consumers, but is there a place for the technology in supply chain operations? Yes, according to a recent study by the ARC Advisory Group. Nearly 70 percent of the 60 high-level supply chain executives surveyed said they're using smart phones like BlackBerrys and iPhones in their daily operations. That surprised even the analysts who conducted the study. "Overall, the adoption among managers is much, much faster than I would have expected," says ARC analyst Steve Banker, who co-wrote the study, "Mobile Technologies Used in SCM Today," with colleague Adrian Gonzalez. Pharmaceutical supplier tests RFID's track, trace capabilities
Material Handling & Logistics    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Laboratorios Gador, one of Argentina's largest pharmaceutical suppliers, has completed an RFID system pilot, evaluating this supply chain technology's ability to track and trace pharmaceutical drugs at the item, pack and pallet level. The company supplies medications to nearly 2.5 million patients each month through its distribution network. The successful test, which was conducted by Telectrónica, Impinj, Zebra Technologies and UPM RFID, is believed to be the first RFID pharmaceutical pilot to be completed in Argentina, demonstrating the technology's ability to identify, track and secure high-value products that are subject to counterfeiting, diversion and theft. The supply chain's systems guru: Interview with C. Dwight Klappich
DC Velocity    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
When C. Dwight Klappich talks supply chain software — what's hot, what's not, where the market's headed — people tend to listen. That's no surprise. Not only has he followed the business for over a decade as a logistics technology analyst, but he also has spent time on the inside. Earlier in his career, Klappich worked for such software developers as Ross Systems (where he was vice president of manufacturing marketing), LPA Software (which since has been acquired by Servigistics), Manugistics and Distribution Management Systems. Today, Klappich serves as a vice president of research at Gartner, where he continues to keep a close eye on IT trends. More

Keytroller’s VANGUARD boasts .2% accuracy unheard of in a hydraulic scale (within 10# in a 5000# load) putting it within accuracy of load cell scales. Unlike a load cell fork or carriage scale, the VANGUARD can not be damaged in a tough handling application. Accuracy is achieved using a bypass module providing the device hundreds of pressure readings instead of only one which is prone to error. RS232 serial port allows wireless export of data or wireless printing of individual or sequence weighing events.

Shippers concerned over possible Suez Canal disruptions
The New York Times    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
As violence has broken out in Egypt, concern has turned to the risk of the blocking of the Suez Canal or nearby pipelines, which could pose a threat to world energy supplies. So far, oil and gas flows through Egypt have not been interrupted, and the army has stepped up security around the canal and pipelines. But rising tensions in the port of Suez have led several shipping companies to order their ships not to change crews in Egypt. Meanwhile, disruptions in government port services have slowed the discharge of some crude oil cargo at the Red Sea port of Ain Sukhna, at the southern entrance to the Suez Canal. More

Material Handling & Logistics    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
With the consumer products industry holding such a prominent position in the supply chain, it would be wise for upstream and downstream partners to pay attention to the evolution of their business priorities. According to Tompkins Associates, international supply chain consultants, uncertainty is as certain as ever, and supply chain leaders must be flexible yet strategic. Tompkins cites globalization in China, mergers and acquisitions, and taking inventory management to a new level as these companies' top survival strategies. You think you ought to be paid HOW much?
Material Flows    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
What do you think a good supply chain manager ought to be paid? Go on, think of a number, and by all means, use your own salary as a baseline. A year ago when we asked that question of our readers, we learned that the average salary for a material handling and logistics manager was just a hair over $80,000. We're crunching the numbers right now for the MH&L 2011 Salary Survey, and if you're in Chicago for the ProMat 2011 show, you can find out whether salaries have gone up, down or pretty much stayed the same. Cliff Holste: Will the new wave of consumer optimism drive investment in DC upgrades?
Distribution Digest    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
When is it time to move forward with capital improvements that will allow the DC to grow while remaining competitive? The obvious answer is before you can no longer satisfy your customer's expectations. However, a more proactive, but often overlooked answer is when the adoption of higher levels of material handling system technology can process items faster, more efficiently and more accurately than current methods can. That kind of incremental improvement should be the key driver for distributors who do the following. More

Trevor Miles: 'Who should know?' — The key to the use of social networks in the supply chain
The 21st Century Supply Chain    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
In January I wrote a blog titled "Social networks and supply chains: It's a question of maturity" in which I commented on the incorporation of social media concepts in supply chain management, I referred to a research report by Nari Viswanathan at Aberdeen. In a follow-up to the report, dealing largely with the early stage of maturity, titled "Enabling Supply Chain Visibility and Collaboration in the Cloud," Viswanathan writes the following. More

Dan Gilmore: What to tell students, bureaucrats about logistics?
Supply Chain Digest    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail
article
In a couple of weeks, I am headed over to Columbus in my home state of Ohio to deliver a speech to a big group of business people, politicians, academics and students that is supposed to have something to do with logistics. The mission, I'm afraid, wasn't exactly clear, but I believe it is about: what is logistics? what is its role in the grand scheme of things? how is Ohio is affected for good or bad by logistics; what thoughts do I have for the students relative to logistics careers? The following is what I am thinking of for a response. More
