MESSAGE FROM WERC
Tips for networking at the 2012 WERC Conference
Strategize. Before you step foot into a conference, you already should have thought about the individuals that you want to meet, the speakers you want to hear, and the information you are hoping to learn. By planning ahead, you will take away from a conference precisely what you were seeking rather than whatever you happen to stumble upon. — "Top 10 Conference Networking Tips" by Kathleen Taddie and Jeremy Goodman

An oft-invoked quotation from the legendary quality expert Dr. W. Edwards Deming states that "You can't manage what you don't measure." True words, indeed. His words have prompted thousands of companies over the past three decades to implement detailed metrics programs to track their performance. Makes sense so far, right? It seems, though, that these efforts often fall short despite the best of intentions. And the problem may have nothing to do with misaligned metrics, lack of strategic vision, or even poor management. Rather, the problem could lie in the important enabling technologies that companies use to improve (and yes, measure) their performance. More

Automation: Filling the gap between narrow aisle and AS/RS
Modern Materials Handling    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Bob Trebilcock writes, "For the last couple of years, AGVs and mobile robots have been getting all the automation love. Who doesn't get a kick from watching those Kiva vehicles shuttle around the floor at ProMat and Modex. Better yet, there have been exciting new developments around trailer loading and unloading AGVs along with the introduction of automatic lift trucks. While end users are still figuring out how these technologies fit in their operations, they could make significant inroads in automating receiving and shipping docks." More

Green is the color of today's TMS
Material Handling & Logistics    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Today's transportation management systems contribute to environmental sustainability by helping ensure that freight gets where it needs to go on time, without inefficient resource consumption. A supply chain founded on green principles must have comprehensive information on everything from fuel efficiency to aggregating and optimizing loads and routes, for planning that reduces both the fuel consumption and carbon footprint of shippers. Such information makes up-to-the-minute route and load scheduling possible in the face of changing weather conditions or just-in-time shipment adjustments. More

Green supply chain: Coca-Cola's water management 4 best practices
TriplePundit    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Coca-Cola's recently published Water Stewardship Replenish Report soberly notes that two-thirds of the world's population lives in severe water stress areas with one billion people lacking access to safe drinking water. Bea Perez, Coca-Cola's Chief Sustainability Officer concludes, "Because responsible water management is at the heart of a sustainable future, overcoming today's water challenges calls for extraordinary action." Water supply is critical to every business, but water for The Coca-Cola Company is the enabling supply chain resource for its approximately 3,000 different products sold in more than 200 countries that generates $35 billion in annual revenues. Comcast puts RFID in data centers to track assets
RFID Journal    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Media, entertainment and communications company Comcast Corp. has begun employing radio frequency identification this month to manage nearly 6,000 IT assets at a 20,000-square-foot data center, with installations currently underway at two additional data centers, located in Colorado and Illinois, expected to be completed this year. The solution, provided by Asset Vue, a supplier of asset and data-center management solutions, utilizes passive EPC Gen 2 ultrahigh-frequency tags from RCD Technology, an Element ID MAS2 mobile reader on a cart, and Asset Vue software to manage location data regarding all IT assets within the center, as well as provide alerts to those conducting inventories, thereby indicating when a server is not at its expected location. Recent events show packaging, labeling integral to safety
Healthcare Packaging    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Packaging folks often lament that they are misunderstood. For example, when environmental concerns are discussed, packaging gets a bad rap as mere waste, as legislators and environmentalists overlook packaging's contributions to safety, marketing, convenience, and efficiency. And as a cost item, packaging users don't always appreciate the necessary sophistication of package materials and designs. More

The power of introverts, the power of quiet
MIT Sloan Management Review    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
"Research strongly suggests that people are more creative when they enjoy privacy and freedom from interruption." So wrote Susan Cain in a New York Times opinion piece. Her first book, "Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can't Stop Talking," was released recently. In the Times essay, Cain argues that "the most spectacularly creative people in many fields are often introverted, according to studies by the psychologists Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi and Gregory Feist." Csikszentmihalyi is a professor of psychology and management at Claremont Graduate University, and Feist is an associate professor of psychology at San Jose State University. More

I have been in supply chain management longer than I care to remember, but there are others who have been in the field even longer, and their experience and wisdom is often on display. I follow the writings and opinions of George Palmatier because he is one of those that gives regular insightful comment. George has a thought-of-the-day email blast that I nearly always think about first thing in the morning, if I am not on the road and have time to digest. More

Occupational safety: Buck routine and postpone the last roundup
Material Flows    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Tom Andel writes, "I tend to blog a lot about safety, particularly where lift trucks are concerned. Now, I don't operate a lift truck as part of my job, so it's easy for me to preach about the need for proper safety training. But here I sit at this keyboard with my left foot propped up on a pillow, encased in a cast. I broke my ankle the other morning while jogging. I'm lucky. This blog could have been about me dying from hypothermia — as detailed by one of my colleagues here at Material Handling & Logistics. But thanks to providence or dumb luck, you're reading a first-person account of my stupidity." More

Is it time to make supplier risk management programs more real-time?
Supply Chain Digest    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Supply chain risk management generally and supplier risk management particularly have been one of the most dominant supply chain trends over the past three to five years. Concern about supply chain risk management has grown even more in the past 12 months as a result of the significant hits delivered to hundreds of supply chains from the earthquake/tsunami in Japan in March 2011, and then mass flooding in Thailand in the second half of the year. But do companies need to move from the traditional, somewhat backward looking approach to supplier risk profiles to one that is more real time? More

Supply chain collaboration drives successful tracking
Material Handling & Logistics    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Tracking technologies such as RFID, WLAN and GPS have become increasingly important due to heightened service, operations, security, and regulatory requirements. While past research has examined the value of tracking technology (RFID in particular), little is known about how and to what extent product, supply network, and environmental characteristics impact post-adoption phases. Based on findings from a focus group study, Loyola University Chicago's new Supply Chain Management program developed a theoretical model of tracking technology assimilation. More

James A. Cooke: New kids on the LMS block
DC Velocity    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
For the past few years, more and more distribution centers have opted for the software route when it comes to managing their workforce. In a bid to boost productivity, they're implementing labor management systems, software that allows companies to monitor individual workers' activity — say, picking or putaway — and benchmark their performance against preset standards. In fact, a recent DC Velocity survey found that 14 percent of respondents planned to buy an LMS solution this year. As for where they can obtain this software, DCs today have a number of choices. To begin with, most of the large warehouse management software (WMS) vendors offer LMS packages or modules. More

PAR-level RTLS solution saves costs at Oregon hospital
RFID Journal    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
When the nursing staff at Sacred Heart Medical Center at River Bend was presented with the hospital's new plans to implement a real-time location system for tracking infusion pumps, the nurses were unenthused. Frustration levels were already high among employees, due to the difficulty of locating pumps and other assets required for use. So when Christian Buchsteiner, the hospital's healthcare improvement engineer, met with dozens of nurses to discuss the RTLS project, he was met with skepticism, he says. "I stood in front of 50 nurses," Buchsteiner recalls, "and told them, 'We will be reducing the number of pumps by 30 percent,' and the nurses said, 'Are you crazy?'" More

    Sustainability as economic game-changer
Environmental Leader    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Companies that rely on out of date, caustic economic modeling rather than engaging in embedded sustainability may find themselves limiting their future profits and positive market perception. This can lead financial institutions into the situation of overexposure to unsustainable investments as marketplaces move to a sustainable global economy. They should also be concerned about future vulnerabilities, as the need is exposed for a longer-term and more holistic approach to financing sustainable assets. More

Tom Andel: Whitney's anthem captures supply chain challenge
Material Flows    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The title of one of the late Whitney Houston's hits represents the problem many companies have with buying into environmental sustainability: "Didn't We Almost Have It All?" Having it all in this case means both carbon neutrality and profit plurality. But as I report in the cover story of this month's Material Handling & Logistics, some shippers aren't ready for the level of commitment required to have it all—so they stop short at almost. One shipper I quote in my story comes out and says it plainly: "I want to date everyone to maximize my enjoyment, not get married. Today, you have to get married in the shipping world [to achieve environmental sustainability]." More
