US West Coast ports face new competitive threat: Mexico
Logistics Management
The epic-length labor contract negotiations between U.S. dockworkers and management on the West Coast took its toll among shippers of perishable commodities last season, but the supply chains of other industries were also severely disrupted. Is this job candidate a devil or angel?
Mel Kleiman
It is human nature to prefer like-minded others who share our values, assessments and opinions, but it's in your best interest to curb this tendency when evaluating job candidates. Nothing could be a bigger hindrance to your organization's success than being fully staffed by cookie-cutter replicas of top management. Think about it. Do your customers all think, look and act alike? Most certainly not. How are you going to "find a need and fill it," if no one on staff knows what that need might be?

The Internet of Anything: This wearable could keep you from throwing out your back

Warehouse workers are the unsung heroes of the modern economy. Everything from food to iPads passes through their hands as the world's goods move from farms and factories to you. They are, in the words of entrepreneur Haytham Elhawary, "industrial athletes." Lifting and lowering boxes and other objects caused more than 100,000 workplace injuries in 2013, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. All those injuries cost businesses some $15 billion, according to the 2014 Liberty Mutual Workplace Safety Index.

Manufacturers looking at a big shortfall of workers
IndustryWeek
The manufacturing industry is looking at shortfall of more than 2,000,000 workers over the next decade, according to new reports from Deloitte and The Manufacturing Institute. The shortage is led by the expected retirement of nearly 3,000,000 baby boomers and fewer young people who see the industry as a career destination. A study survey showed while 9 in 10 Americans believe manufacturing is essential to the U.S. economy, only 1 in 3 parents would encourage their kids to pursue a career in the industry.

The workplace wellness debate: Should employers adopt these programs?
IndustryWeek
Full-time employees in the U.S. work approximately 1,700 hours per year. With so much time spent at the daily grind, healthy habits can often fall by the wayside. To combat this, more than 90 percent of large employers and 73 percent of small employers sponsor wellness initiatives in the workplace. For many employers, these programs promise savings in the face of rising heathcare costs, and for their employees, the opportunity to start or maintain healthy behaviors such as working out, getting flu shots and screening for high blood pressure.
