Logistics News: How complex is your distribution center?
Supply Chain Digest    Share   Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Most agree that in general, distribution center operations are growing more complex, as the velocity of product flow and scope of what is required to be executed in the DC continue to expand for many companies. But can that DC complexity be measured? It's not an entirely academic question. First, an ability to measure DC complexity would perhaps help DC managers and logistics executives gain insight into distribution center requirements and corresponding strategies. More

Greener a factor in DC site selection, design
Multichannel Merchant    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
More companies are prone to putting down greener roots these days, according to a recent survey on facility sustainability from Raleigh, N.C.-based Tompkins Supply Chain Consortium. Businesses increasingly are using techniques such as designing a building so that it significantly reduces the amount of water needed for operation. Or they're interested in locating a site so that it does not disturb any nearby wetlands, soil or streams, according to the survey. More

Quality & Metrics: A metrics culture drives better performance
SupplyChainBrain    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Companies still are trying to figure out which are the metrics that matter, how to get everyone to agree on standard definitions, and how to turn the numbers into something actionable. This year, we saw more emphasis on financial supply chain metrics, such as working capital and cash to cash. Making procurement initiatives work
Strategic Meetings Management    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
I recently was in Charlotte, N.C., attending ProcureCon Indirect, a conference for executives who manage procurement of indirect spend, such as travel and meetings services. I sat on a panel, "Driving Change from the Bottom Up Towards Strategic Indirect Sourcing." One of the significant best practices I could share was to be aware of the myth of the "M" word, that is, "mandate." A lot of procurement folks get a false sense of security that when they receive an executive mandate that directs employees to comply with a new strategic initiative, then everything has fallen into place. Newly released details of National Cybersecurity initiative reveal focus on global supply chains
@Risk    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
In keeping with the Obama administration's renewed commitment to transparency, White House Cybersecurity Coordinator Howard Schmidt directed the release of a summary description of the largely classified Comprehensive National Cybersecurity Initiative. The five-page declassified document outlines 12 major proposals designed to help secure the United States in cyberspace, and it's significant that among this list of a dozen priorities there's recognition of the growing risks associated with today's complex global supply chains. EPA raises initial threshold for greenhouse gas regulation
The Wall Street Journal    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency will set an emissions threshold of at least 75,000 tons a year -- and possibly more than 100,000 tons a year -- for power plants and other industrial projects for the initial stage of stationary-source greenhouse gas regulations between 2011 and 2012, the head of the agency said March 3. EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson indicated the agency still may require projects such as power plants and refineries that applied in prior years -- say in 2009 or 2010 -- to apply for new greenhouse gas permits. Sourcing & Procurement Solutions: Being a leader means taking costs out
SupplyChainBrain    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Sourcing and procurement is finally delivering the value. Capitalizing on the economy, 92 sourcing and procurement organizations interviewed by AMR found the most value when they focused on taking costs out. Many organizations utilize suite technologies -- including spend analytics, sourcing and contracts -- because they facilitate cost reductions and improve the time to value for savings. However, almost all of these organizations noted that technology is only a portion of the cost take-out equation. More

The Wall Street Journal    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
For years, companies have suggested changes to bread-and-butter business school courses. But recently, firms have begun to try to make their mark on another subject: social responsibility and sustainability. Some companies are taking a hands-on approach to help train potential employees, using real projects in an effort to help students move beyond case studies that quickly are becoming outdated. More
