Business Insurance    Share   Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Recent natural disasters that caused significant supply chain disruptions around the world highlight the need for new insurance solutions to address business interruption and supply chain exposures, according to a survey of risk managers and financial executives. More than half of those surveyed agreed that the insurance industry needs to develop new products to help organizations address supply chain risks. Among those surveyed, 61 percent said they had experienced a supply chain disruption in the last five years that led to a loss of earnings, and 30 percent said they recovered insurance claims related those loses. Gartner: State of the Warehouse Management Systems Market 2012
Supply Chain Digest    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The supply chain analysts at Gartner once again have produced a "Magic Quadrant" for Warehouse Management Systems, with the report written as it has been for about the last decade by analyst Dwight Klappich. This exercise, as with all Magic Quadrants, comes after what is usually several months of research, and results in a variety of vendors and WMS solutions (or whatever category is being studied in an MQ) being placed into one of four quadrants based on the vendor's "ability to execute" and "completeness of vision." Each of these two dimensions are broken into low and high attributes, producing four sections (such as "low vision, high execution," as just an example). More

    Palletpalooza!
DC Velocity    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Who doesn't like pallets? They make warehousing and transportation easier and more efficient, they save time and money, and they're found in just about every warehouse in the world — even in Antarctica. In other words, they're both ubiquitous and indispensable. But they're not exactly exciting. After all, they just, well, sit there. More

Not getting any better for shippers any time soon
Material Handling & Logistics    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
It's not getting any easier out there in the freight markets for shippers, based on the latest Shippers Condition Index report from FTR Associates. The index for January 2012 dropped 0.2 points to a reading of -4.8, reflecting a slow acceleration of freight growth that will continue to drive the index gradually lower over the remainder of the year. The SCI sums up all market influences that affect shippers; a reading above zero suggests a favorable shipping environment, while a reading below zero is unfavorable. More

LNG: The road to stable truck rates?
DC Velocity    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Tired of sweating higher diesel fuel prices? Then maybe it's time to find a trucking company that's running its delivery fleet on liquefied natural gas instead of diesel. LNG is the liquid form of natural gas, which is primarily methane. It's related to compressed natural gas, which, as the name suggests, is condensed under high pressure. Although truck engines can run on both LNG and CNG, it does not make sense to use CNG for longhaul trucking because compressed gas adds weight that must be carried along with the freight, according to experts. Goodyear Dunlop Europe plans RFID trials for bus tires
RFID Journal    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Goodyear Dunlop Tires Europe expects to conduct field trials of tires in the commercial sector later this year, similar to the way it has incorporated EPC Gen 2 passive ultrahigh-frequency RFID tags into the tires it manufactures in Europe for truck races, as well as for truck trailers used for hauling cargo. The upcoming trials are expected to include the tagging of bus tires. The deployment of RFID technology is part of the company's FleetOnlineSolutions tire-management program, designed with the help of British software firm Datalinx, to capture and store data regarding individual tires. By logging onto the FleetOnlineSolutions website, tire owners, service providers and Goodyear Dunlop can share that information. More

Livemint.com and The Wall Street Journal    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Heads of logistics or supply chain divisions of companies are no longer being perceived as backroom or truck and warehousing managers. With Tim Cook, who handled the supply chain of Apple Inc., becoming Apple's CEO, the job has not only become glamorous but also underscored the fact that supply chain managers do have a voice in company boardrooms as well. Social media and the coming supply chain revolution
CFO    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Social media has been effectively assimilated into marketing and human resources strategies. However, very few companies have integrated the modern communications tools into their supply chains, even though there are a number of good reasons to do so. That probably will change over the next few years. Most of the commercially available social media software products remain in their relative infancy. But early adopters of dedicated platforms for real-time communications within the supply chain have developed and are evolving solutions to not only improve communications but also build a valuable knowledge repository. James A. Cooke: What you should know about cloud computing
DC Velocity    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
When it comes to selecting so-called "cloud" software apps for their distribution operations, logistics managers have two choices: a software-as-a-service offering or a hosted solution. Each approach has its pros and cons, says Frank Camean, president of consulting and systems integration firm 4Sight Supply Chain Group. A clear understanding of the two choices is critical to making the right decision for a given company's operations. SaaS is generally a good choice for companies getting started with cloud computing. RFID tracks Spanish shoppers' interest in shoes, books
RFID Journal    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
When placed on display at stores, products are often picked up by customers for a closer look, and are then moved around the store and put back down, all before ever making it to the point of sale. Stores and manufacturers can learn from this behavior, by determining how much interest something like a book cover generates, as well as which sections of a store evoke the most interest among browsing shoppers. Retailers and goods manufacturers have data regarding the number of products sold, but few possess information indicating the level of customer interest prior to a sale. More

    Escape business's Bermuda Triangle
Material Flows    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Proprietary is a loaded term. To technology manufacturers it's a selling point, implying superiority and properties that can't be matched by competitors. To some users of that technology it's a tool vendors use to trap them in an exclusive relationship — thus giving them the ability to command confiscatory prices. Place a technology distributor in the middle and you have the makings of a Bermuda Triangle of distrust — out of which no winners can emerge. That is, unless, the three parties in this triad treat their relationship as something proprietary in itself — something that gives each one of them a competitive advantage none of them could achieve by themselves. Material Handling & Logistics    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Retailers and supply chain management executives are feeling a heightened urgency to shift from cost cutting to growth, according to a recent report from the Retail Industry Leaders Association and Auburn University. The most significant takeaway from the report centers on the importance of multichannel operations, including fulfillment of dot-com, mobile and tablet orders. The report states that electronic e-commerce sales have grown by more than 15 percent to $35.3 billion versus an overall sales growth of 4.1 percent versus the previous year. More
