Even for the most sophisticated supply chain organizations, achieving adequate levels of visibility in the supply chain is an ongoing challenge. More

Reverse Logistics: The right service provider mirrors your sustainability efforts
SupplyChainBrain    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The "triple bottom line," a phrase coined by John Elkington in 1989, has become a guiding principle for corporate strategists of the 21st century. Although the term may not be a familiar one, the underlying elements certainly are. This means companies are striving to achieve success through financial means, environmental/green/sustainability efforts and social channels. More

What's holding your company back: The dangers of dogged loyalty
Chief Executive    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Why is it so hard for companies to do something truly new? After all, companies innovate all the time. They innovate products. They innovate marketing efforts. They innovate processes to increase efficiency. Through these efforts, companies innovate and improve their existing business model in incremental ways, streamlining and increasing its efficiency, tweaking the profit formula, bringing new key resources to the table, and changing and refining individual processes. Truckers chafe at alternative fuel mandates
DC Velocity    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
If market potential were a yardstick for commercial success, then alternative fuels like biodiesel and natural gas would be a sure-fire winner. After all, who could argue with energy sources that can be indigenously made from readily available materials, and, depending on the fuel, could be less expensive than the traditional diesel fuel that powers the nation's heavy-duty trucks? Well, for one, the trucking industry might raise an objection. More

FedEx ally blocks aviation measure in fight with UPS
BusinessWeek    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Republican Sen. Bob Corker, who represents FedEx Corp.'s home state of Tennessee, said he will block legislation funding the Federal Aviation Administration because a provision may be added later making it easier for workers at the company to join unions. Corker's action extends a years-long fight in Washington between the mostly non-union FedEx and its unionized rival United Parcel Service Inc. over how workers at both companies should be treated under U.S. labor laws. Sens. Kerry, Graham and Lieberman seek to craft new compromise climate bill that businesses will find favorable
The Green Supply Chain    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on
LinkedinE-mail article
Word from Washington, D.C., is that Democratic Sen. John Kerry, Independent Sen. Joe Lieberman and Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham are working on a compromise climate bill that they hope can be less controversial than the cap and trade bill passed in the House last summer and that can gain more support from business. Whether some form of carbon emissions regulation and/or cost is created as law is one of the most important issues facing supply chain professionals and their businesses. More

Top 10 logistics challenges for 2010 (and beyond)
DC Velocity    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Economists are in broad agreement that a recovery is under way, but that's not to say our troubles are over. In fact, it's likely the logistics/supply chain community will continue to experience difficulties throughout the year. What are the biggest concerns? With apologies to David Letterman, I have developed a "Top 10" list of issues that bear watching in 2010. In no particular order, they are as follows. More

6 industries in search of survival
strategy+business    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Each year Booz & Company's industry teams write perspectives for their clients, reflecting on the previous year and considering what may come in the year ahead -- and how to respond to it. Not surprisingly, the perspectives for 2010 (12 in all) were dominated by gloomy pronouncements of the damage left by the global recession. But in addition to the long shadow cast by the economic crisis, this year's industry outlooks also contain a collective note of warning that deserves even more attention: A handful of underlying structural changes are having a more irrevocable, dislocating effect on virtually every industry than the financial meltdown ever could. Sourcing & Procurement: The role of weather and climate change in commodity hedging strategies
SupplyChainBrain    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
For many companies, understanding and effectively hedging commodity prices make the difference between profit and loss -- or in extreme cases the firm's very survival. Many interdependent factors affect commodity prices: among them are demand/business cycle, supply constraints, regulation/political factors, speculation/investment market factors and exchange rates. I have long touted the advantages of a multi-discipline hedging strategy team with expertise in sourcing and commodity management, engineering, treasury, product management and economic analysis. Now you should add weather and climate change to that list. More
