  • It's 11 p.m. — Do you know where your pallets are?
    DC Velocity
It is far too easy for pallets to "leak" out of a supply chain. A pallet misplaced in the distribution center here. One never returned from a customer there. Another used for an in-store display. Yet another stuck "temporarily" in an offsite warehouse and then forgotten. A few more picked up by thieves in back of a retail store. Taken individually, these losses might seem minor, but the problem of a few missing pallets can quickly add up to considerable cost.

Can manual DC operations benefit from adopting a system management strategy?
    Supply Chain Digest
Integrated DC operations tend to be more efficient, easier to manage, and capable of much faster processing times than the typical departmentalized operation. An interesting consideration is whether or not a company must first purchase a material handling system in order to acquire the benefits of an integrated system operation. This is an important consideration because while most DCs, regardless of size, purchase and/or lease various types of materials handling equipment only larger, high volume operations actually have a comprehensive picking and shipping system in place.

5 areas to focus on when vetting your supply base
    By Jack Ori
Business managers must make rigorous examination of their supply bases a regular part of their routine. Failure to vet the supply base regularly can lead to unnecessary risks; businesses could end up losing money or running afoul of federal or international trade and business laws. According to Shared Services, failure to vet supply bases costs companies more than $1.6 billion per year. With this much at stake, businesses need to be aware not only of what risks and limitations exist in their supply bases, but also what standards to focus on when examining supply bases so that they can minimize such risks.

    Mindfulness in managing risk
    By Dr. David Hillson
Mindfulness has its roots in Eastern religion. It is also used therapeutically to treat a variety of psychological conditions, as well as in coaching to encourage excellence in healthy people. Used properly, mindfulness can also make our risk management more effective. Being mindful means bringing your complete attention to your current experience on a moment-to-moment basis, being aware of everything in your surroundings, acknowledging what is there and accepting it as valid. So how can this help us to manage risk better?

    By C. Fredrick Crum
When I ask leaders, "How do you define success?" I often get asked, "Are you referring to my professional life, personal life or for this organization?" I often respond asking by this rhetorical question, "How many lives do you have?"
