  • Can automated solutions reduce or eliminate DC congestion?
    Distribution Digest
The simplicity of utilizing pallet jacks and order picker trucks provides a high degree of operational flexibility and is therefore attractive to some distributors. However, the need to frequently adjust labor up or down depending on volume, along with the resultant nonproductive travel time and reoccurring traffic gridlock, represents a big problem to others.

Expert: Different perspectives on ROI drive more aggressive adoption of distribution automation in Europe than US
    Supply Chain Digest
A variety of factors are pushing companies in Europe to adopt highly automated distribution center systems, one of which is a more longer term view of the business and return on investment. That according to Marc Wulfraat, president of MWPVL International, a consulting firm that recently has done a lot of work in the Euro market and seen many of these systems first hand over the last 18 months.

    The ideal praise-to-criticism ratio
    Harvard Business Review
Which is more effective in improving team performance: using positive feedback to let people know when they're doing well, or offering constructive comments to help them when they're off track? New research suggests that this is a trick question. The answer, as one might intuitively expect, is that both are important. But the real question is: in what proportion?

    How to reduce pallet damage
    DC Velocity
Pallet damage can add significant cost and waste to your supply chain. And it's not just the cost of repairing or replacing the pallet itself; you also have to factor in the expenses your company will incur if the product loaded on that pallet is damaged as a result. "Whenever the pallet is damaged, most of the time, the product on top is also susceptible to damage," says Skip Miller, vice president of global quality for pallet pooler CHEP. "Even if it's not damaged at the same time the pallet is, it's more susceptible to damage during the rest of the trip through the supply chain."

Fleet tracking: How to reduce fuel costs
    By Ryan Driscoll
Let's face it, the cost of fuel isn't something fleets can hide from any longer. We all know it's going to continue to rise, and there's nothing we can do about it. What you can do, however, is be proactive in keeping your fuel costs down. GPS fleet tracking will help you save on fuel costs, which you otherwise would not be able to control. In addition to cutting idle time, monitoring speeding and optimizing routes, you also can keep fuel costs down by monitoring unauthorized usage, fuel card fraud and maintenance. Here are a few real-life examples.

Is your order process costing you customers and money?
    The 21st Century Supply Chain
It's just after lunch on a Friday afternoon. The phone rings. It's a company you've been trying to turn into a customer for years. They have a big order with your competition that they can't get in on time and have decided to give you a try. The problem is: they need the order in two weeks — less than the lead time for these items and you don't have enough finished goods inventory to satisfy this order. To make matters worse, they want an answer by close of business or they will look elsewhere. If you can get these orders on time, you could be able to win significant future business from them. The stakes are immense. What factors need to be considered when deciding on a course of action?

Big picture: Little things that make a big difference in your operation
    Modern Materials Handling
Automation, technology and software promise new levels of efficiency and productivity along with the capability to execute complex order fulfillment strategies. That's the good news. The bad news: just as a supply chain is only as efficient as its weakest link, a sophisticated materials handling system is only as efficient as the bottlenecks in a distribution center. A high-speed order fulfillment engine won't hit its numbers if inventory doesn't get off the receiving dock or orders can't get through manual packing stations to meet shipping cut-off times.
