  • MODEX 2014: The big inspired by the small
    Chain of Thought
Tom Andel writes, "Walking the floor of a supply chain technology show can be daunting for a small-business owner. The displays at such a show can often send a veiled message to such attendees: 'Not for You.' That was 'Not the Case' at MODEX 2014, the supply chain and transportation show at Atlanta's Georgia World Congress Center. In fact many of the solutions discussed there were developed for small companies."

Care in planning yields healthy gains
    DC Velocity
Any time a resident of South Africa calls on a local pharmacy for a prescription medication, chances are the drug in question passed through a new 32,000-square-meter (344,445-square-foot) distribution center near Johannesburg operated by UTi Pharma, the company that distributes 55 percent of the pharmaceuticals in that country.

US truck driver turnover rate remains high, but for now seems to remain just below crisis levels
    Supply Chain Digest
Worries about a U.S. shortage of truck drivers continue on, with turnover of drivers in large truckload fleets near to 100 percent in Q4 and for the full year 2013, the American Trucking Associations reported. Of course, those numbers do not mean large fleets are completely turning over their base of drivers each year. What happens is the carriers may go through three or four new drivers to obtain one that sticks, driving the total turnover number to high levels. But many still say the driver situation remains a significant problem, and is just a bit of economic growth away from being something of a crisis for carriers and shippers.

The 3 P's of employee terminations
    By D. Albert Brannen
The vast majority of employment-related lawsuits follow the termination of an employee. Employers can minimize their legal liability by considering the "three P's" of employee terminations: people, procedures and paperwork.

Does the trend toward a more employee-centric approach impact on DC system ROI?
    Supply Chain Digest
Cliff Holste writes, "The trend among shippers appears to be more focused on benefits such as increased operational flexibility and agility, faster response times, and the ability to provide more efficient value added services. To some degree this refocus is reflective of shippers adapting to the new demand economy where the pace of consumer change (driven mostly by Internet sales) is growing at an unprecedented rate."

    How do you define success?
    By C. Fredrick Crum
When I ask leaders, "How do you define success?" I often get asked, "Are you referring to my professional life, personal life or for this organization?" I often respond asking by this rhetorical question, "How many lives do you have?" Many leaders simply really have not thought deeply enough about what their personal success really looks like.

It's 11 p.m. — Do you know where your pallets are?
    DC Velocity
It is far too easy for pallets to "leak" out of a supply chain. A pallet misplaced in the distribution center here. One never returned from a customer there. Another used for an in-store display. Yet another stuck "temporarily" in an offsite warehouse and then forgotten.
