  • How automation helps shippers meet demand for faster order fulfillment
    Material Handling & Logistics
Consumers everywhere are demanding faster access to the retail goods they purchase — with next-day delivery having practically become the norm, and same-day delivery and in-store pickup on the rise. Similarly, for many manufacturers and operators of industrial processes, demand is growing for near-real time access to replacement inventory and spare parts to ensure uninterrupted operation.

4 steps to effective performance management
    By D. Albert Brannen
Getting the most out of employees has always challenged employers. It is particularly difficult in today's highly regulated business environment with increased global competition and changing employee attitudes. Performance management is not just about dealing with the poor performers. Instead, as explained in the following paragraphs, it is a more holistic process that begins with getting the right people, setting employee expectations, coaching employees and ultimately dismissing the poor performers or employees who do not fit the organization.

Cliff Holste: Don't confuse DC shipping volume with MHS handling capacity
    Supply Chain Digest
Shippers need to ship X amount of product per day. That volume can be expressed in a variety of ways, such as: pieces, units, cases, pounds, containers, pallets loads, trucks loads, etc. However, the order fulfillment conveyor system provider can only guarantee that the material handling system is capable of delivering Y cartons per minute to the shipping dock. The X verse Y metrics are very different.

    Up, up, and away
    DC Velocity
We may be in a "jobless recovery" and the 2013 holiday shopping season may have been a disappointing one for many retailers, but with the housing market gaining traction, industrial production on the upswing, and the U.S. economy improving in many other respects, it's not surprising that U.S. consumer confidence is up — way up. In fact, the monthly average for the Reuters/University of Michigan Consumer Sentiment Index for 2013 was the highest since 2007.

Consumer technologies show promise for logistics
    Material Handling & Logistics
Technologies originally designed for consumer electronics can also be used in many logistics applications, according to a new study conducted by logistics service provider DHL. This reverses past practices in which new technologies like Microsoft's video game camera Kinect, smart watches and NFC (near-field communications) technology were initially restricted to business, only migrating to private uses later, according to authors of a trend report, "Low-Cost Sensor Technology," from DHL Customer Solutions & Innovation.

It's 11 p.m. — Do you know where your pallets are?
    DC Velocity
It is far too easy for pallets to "leak" out of a supply chain. A pallet misplaced in the distribution center here. One never returned from a customer there. Another used for an in-store display. Yet another stuck "temporarily" in an offsite warehouse and then forgotten.

Let your team help you manage your time
    Harvard Business Review
Good managers study time management techniques. They analyze their calendars and prioritize their to-do lists in an effort to eke out a few percentage points of extra personal productivity — which is all to the good. Great managers, by contrast, realize a fundamental fact: their time, not budget or staffing levels, is their scarcest resource and their team must be staffed and organized in a way that will maximize their own, personal impact.

    Modern Materials Handling

How to unplug, turn down the noise and relax in 4 steps
    By Jared Kligerman
While technology is great in many ways, we have become rather dependent on it. Research has connected our technological obsession to increased rates of stress, attention problems, depression, cognitive function and anxiety, not to mention the negative effect it can have on our relationships. It also affects our comfort level with solitude and silence as we feel we are missing out or that something is wrong. So how do we disconnect and find quiet time? How can we regain our enjoyment of silence and solitude to capitalize on the health and creative benefits that come with it?
