Mastering the basics of leading warehouse people
Ken Ackerman
In the warehouse, it is not uncommon for an outstanding forklift operator to be promoted into management. Yet, the promotion decision is frequently made because of an outstanding work effort, not because that person has any training or experience in managing the activities of other people.
If the newly promoted supervisor or manager fails, the effect on the warehouse can be quite severe.
How to negotiate nicely without being a pushover
Harvard Business Review
We all want it both ways: to get what we want from a tough negotiation and to walk away with our relationship intact. The good news is that kind of outcome is possible. But how exactly do you drive a hard bargain while also employing soft skills? How do you advocate for what you want without burning important bridges?
How to build a comprehensive supply chain risk management strategy
SupplyChainBrain
Supply chain risk management is a major concern for many companies today. According to a Gartner IT Risk Management Survey, 70 percent of those canvassed said that risk management data would influence board-level decisions — up from just 46 percent a year earlier. Security is just one component of a risk management strategy. There is a wide array of considerations in any comprehensive risk mitigation plan.
FAA gives Amazon green light on drone testing — again
Multichannel Merchant
Less than a month after a previous conditional approval for Amazon to test its Prime Air drones — which was scuttled when the company complained the vehicle approved was obsolete due to the lengthy process — the Federal Aviation Administration again gave Amazon permission to test its unmanned aircraft system. The temporary exemption to FAA regulations for Amazon's drone testing expires April 30, 2017.

How cloud enables and supports the lean warehouse
Manufacturing Business
For many manufacturers and distributors, a seamless supply chain of highly efficient and tightly integrated business processes sharing a single unified source of accurate real-time data seems an unachievable goal. That's not surprising since such organizations are struggling to gain control over their entire supply chain using a mix of disparate systems that fail to fully mesh with one another creating silos of outdated and unreliable information. Instead of enabling manufacturers and distributors, a mixture of poorly connected systems actually work against organizations to create bottlenecks in the free flow of information resulting in order delays, picking and packaging errors, and dissatisfied customers and partners.
Managing supply risk for distributors
IMPO
When considering supply chain risk for distributors, many different challenges can be categorized as "risks," including more obvious challenges such as natural disasters, continuously monitored risks like fluctuating transportation costs or more subtle risks involving the evolution of demand for certain products. As distributors continue to enhance services to customers to remain competitive in today’s market, constant diligence is necessary to maintain a streamlined and efficient supply chain that is resistant to disruption.

Don't let desperation drive your decisions
Anne Rose
You're short-handed and desperately need to hire another employee, so you hire the first breathing person that mails in a job application.
Or maybe there's been a dearth of clients and your bank account is desperately low. You need a client fast, so you accept the first prospective customer who calls on the phone.
Assume nothing: 5 tests every manufacturer should run quarterly
IndustryWeek
Spring brings showers, flowers and a fresh round of decluttering at homes and offices all around North America. Others will use the time to perform an annual review of broken work processes. Manufacturers can't wait that long; conditions change too frequently.
North American factory activity has been trending down for months after entering the fall of 2014 on a sustained rally. In the U.S., the Institute for Supply Management said its index fell from 52.9 in February to 51.5 in March — the fifth consecutive monthly decline.
Supply chain sustainability needs a fresh viewpoint
Environmental Leader
There are a number of recent examples of reputable organizations facing the ire of customers, investors and governments due to unwarranted incidents in their supply chains. It is becoming increasingly clear that unsustainable supply chains can have negative impact on a company's reputation and profitability. As a result, the sustainability of supply chains is getting renewed attention from organizations worldwide.
