  • Could visual identification technologies revolutionize logistics operations?
    Supply Chain Digest
Tremendous progress is being made in the area of visual identification technology — with potential huge implications for supply chain and logistics systems. The basic idea is this: increasingly, cameras and supporting software can be used to identify products in the same way a bar code or RFID tag might be used today. VIT systems identify products based on their image characteristic, and/or potentially specific markings.

Are China's supply chains gauged for accuracy?
    Chain of Thought
The Wall Street Journal reported that economists were expressing doubt about China's recently surging export numbers, citing both the slow growth in the economies of many countries that usually source from China and the rise in the value of the yuan. Have the export numbers been inflated by companies hoping to further goose the yuan's value and therefore juice-up their own profit margins?

Looking outside the 4 walls: Improving distribution center operations
    By Matt Emison
In today's economic environment, there is significant pressure for companies to reduce their distribution operations costs. In many cases, companies look only within the four walls of the facility for cost savings. While there are often cost-saving opportunities within the distribution center, taking a broader look at upstream and downstream processes can yield significant savings both in the supply chain and within the distribution center.

    Sustainability's chain reaction
    Material Handling & Logistics
Normally you wouldn't want to be exposed to something that's communicable and makes you turn green, but Bruce Hagenau welcomes this as a supply chain phenomenon. As president of Metcam, a precision fabricator of custom sheet-metal components and assemblies, he is dealing with more and more customers for whom being green will help you get more of their business. This green contagion also is known as sustainability, and Hagenau cites several OEMs who want their suppliers to join them in spreading it around.

5 things leaders are thinking, but not talking about
    Forbes
Glenn Llopis writes, "It amazes me just how many leaders don't act like leaders. They define themselves more by their job title and job description, rather than the required courage, resiliency and determination to continually renew and reinvent themselves — while at the same time having their team's best interests at heart."
