This is a proposal to help OEMs and their distributors save each other money, while offering end users products that service easier and last longer. OEMs and their authorized dealer networks use different business models in their relationships when it comes to spare parts. OEMs focus on designing and/or specifying the capability of a new condition part based on the following. More

4 job trends sustainability pros need to know about
GreenBiz.com    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Ellen Weinreb writes, "As a sustainability recruiter, I have a unique vantage point to observe the evolution of sustainability across industries — as a practice as well as a profession. While talent show articles focus on the intersection of sustainability and human resources, today I want to take a different tack by highlighting some job trends. Simply by reading job descriptions, one can obtain information about a company's plans for expanding their sustainability programs. When a chief sustainability officer gets approval to increase his or her budget, one of the first things to follow is a job posting." More

How transportation and logistics can overcome talent starvation
Material Handling & Logistics    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Workforce development among logistics employers is not keeping pace, according to the latest edition of PwC's Transportation & Logistics 2030 series, Volume 5: Winning the Talent Race. The report notes that the aging population worldwide quickly is creating a labor shortage while T&L companies are struggling to attract the new, younger workers who typically view jobs in the T&L sector as dead-ends because of factors including low wages and unfavorable working environments. Customs' ACE initiative continues to crawl forward
DC Velocity    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
It's been so long since U.S. Customs and Border Protection began work on its Automated Commercial Environment information system that one could be forgiven for assuming the project must have ground to a halt at some point. But according to Cindy Allen, executive director of CBP's ACE Business Office, the agency continues to press forward with both existing features for ACE and some new ones. Allen provided an update on the decade-old program at the recent Coalition of New England Companies for Trade Northeast Trade and Transportation Conference held in Newport, R.I. More

    Managing confrontation in multicultural teams
Harvard Business Review    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Everyone knows that a little confrontation from time to time is constructive, right? And the classic business literature confirms it. Patrick Lencioni's "Five Dysfunctions of a Team," for example, discusses at length how to achieve the right amount of confrontation for ultimate team effectiveness — and concludes that fear of conflict is one of the five major barriers to success. It was a bestseller in the U.S. But what if you come from a culture where confrontation is downright rude? More

Recent developments in order fulfillment methods, technologies renew interest in DC automation
Distribution Digest    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
A few weeks ago the big news was Amazon's purchase of Kiva Systems. This move on the part of Amazom.com continues to have a ripple effect throughout the logistics industry. One of the most immediate and positive effects of this surprising acquisition has been to shine a laser beam of light focused directly on how order fulfillment is accomplished in distribution centers throughout the industry. Why? Because the adoption of new methods and technologies by a major player is always an attention getter, and because when it comes to improving order picking, packing, and shipping strategies, most companies are not sure what solution(s) are the best for their operations. Rising labor costs in China and their impact on the supply chain
The 21st Century Supply Chain    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
In October 2011, Simon Rabinovitch of the Financial Times published an article titled "China labor cost soars as wages surge by 22 percent." This figure is an average across the breadth of the country, with Shenzen and Beijing named as the costliest locations to do business. This trend has been covered extensively by the media in recent months, including Supply Chain Digest last month. More

How to communicate like you mean it
CBS MoneyWatch    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Steve Tobak writes, "If you could only hear yourself, you'd know that things don't always come out the way you intend. You'd also understand that, sometimes, you sound like an idiot. Don't take that the wrong way; it's true of everyone, from time to time, albeit some more than others. What got me thinking about this is a comment to one of my posts on a LinkedIn group. The guy was trying so hard to get attention, sound smart, beat his drum, indulge himself, who knows what. But he was caustic, condescending, and contradicted himself, all in the same paragraph. As a result, he came across like an idiot." More

    Sustainability and the supply chain
Strategic Sourceror    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Green procurement policies generally state that organizations will make an effort to purchase goods and services that minimize environmental impacts and ultimately allow the company to create a smaller footprint. While the supply base has grown tremendously in this industry over the past several years, there are still quite a few hurdles to overcome when implementing these best practices in organizations. The following myths and challenges may sound familiar. More

Vizinex releases 4 new tags for specialized applications
RFID Journal    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
RCD Technology has renamed itself Vizinex RFID, and it has released four passive radio frequency identification tags intended for such specialized applications as tracking assets in places previously out of reach for the technology. The name change was instituted to reflect the firm's shift from focusing on customized, often-challenging RFID installations to selling the tags it developed for those deployments on a commercial level. What's that strange glow? Is it my supply chain?
The 21st Century Supply Chain    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
John Westerveld writes, "I was scanning my reader feed when this headline leaped out at me: 'Radioactive scrap metal is new threat to global supply chains.' This article references an incident at Bed, Bath and Beyond where a shipment of metal tissue box holders set off a radiation detector in California. While in this particular instance the product was not considered dangerous (it was taken off the shelves anyway), it still opens an interesting set of questions as more and more of our metal supply comes from metal recycling."
