  • The next big trend: Dynamic optimization
    DC Velocity
For all their many advantages, transportation management systems may be too brittle for today's flexible supply chains. This type of software is terrific at determining the lowest-cost carrier to move a shipment between a fixed origin and destination. But in today's volatile world, too often those points are anything but fixed.

    North America's 50 most successful 3PLs
    SupplyChainBrain
The business of classifying third-party logistics providers (3PLs) gets harder each year. For example, Ryder, a dominant dedicated contract carrier since 1980, is now in warehousing and distribution and is a major transportation manager. All of those activities make it the fifth-largest 3PL based in North America. And, of course, the story doesn't end there.

Top 10 loss control tips for 2013: Hand/finger safety programs
    By Dennis Truitt
Regardless of the situation, it is always important to protect your hands and fingers. This is the part of the body that is most likely to be injured at work. Even with glove improvements and campaigns to increase hand and finger safety, it is still essential to have a hand and finger safety program readily accessible and widely distributed. Enhance your hand/finger safety by implementing a hazard recognition and assessment program. This program should clearly identify pinch points, hot spots, rotating equipment and automated machinery.

Is cloud-based WMS ready for prime time?
    Supply Chain Digest
Warehouse Management Systems have been somewhat late joining the "cloud" party, but that has certainly started to change. Just how ready is cloud-based WMS for prime time performance? Interest and adoption of cloud-based Warehouse Management has been much slower than in areas such as Transportation Management Systems, supply chain visibility solutions, global trade management, and some other categories, probably about on par with cloud-based supply chain planning, which also has been slow to evolve.

The guts to spend versus the brains to invest
    Chain of Thought
Despite fears about the effects of legislative and regulatory efforts like Obamacare, not to mention taxation policies and consumer reaction to them, it looks like U.S. businesses are finally tired of cowering. According to PwC's latest "Manufacturing Barometer" business outlook report, more than half of the U.S. industrial manufacturers they surveyed remain positive about the U.S. economy in the near term — 55 percent, to be precise. That's up seven points from their fourth quarter report. Bobby Bono, U.S. industrial manufacturing leader for PwC, is being careful not to let these numbers elicit too much exuberance, however.

Automation: What's next for supply chain software
    Modern Materials Handling
If you've been around this industry for 20 years or so, you may remember the origins of the best-of-breed WMS market we know today. The catalyst was compliance labeling. Major retailers like Walmart began to require their suppliers to label their cartons to speed up the receiving process. Basic inventory and warehouse management systems then on the market had been designed to handle pallets. They weren't up to the job of creating custom labels for cartons or the value-added services that followed.

If it doesn't go well, and they don't hit their numbers, it could spell doom for the business. This of course, puts a great deal of stress on supply chain logistics systems to respond. At the center of all this activity are the DCs.

Looking outside the 4 walls: Improving distribution center operations
    By Matt Emison
In today's economic environment, there is significant pressure for companies to reduce their distribution operations costs. In many cases, companies look only within the four walls of the facility for cost savings. While there are often cost-saving opportunities within the distribution center, taking a broader look at upstream and downstream processes can yield significant savings both in the supply chain and within the distribution center.
