    Supply Chain Digest
It can take months or even years to champion even a modest DC project through all of the twists and turns on the road from initial idea stage to an approved and funded project. Unfortunately, for companies with limited resources, the serious amount of time involved can be discouraging and lead to termination of an otherwise good project.

    DC Velocity
Transportation intermediaries have gained more clout in the less-than-truckload industry than ever before, a movement that is changing the landscape for all concerned. Freight brokers and third-party logistics service providers that also offer brokerage services have long been involved in the LTL segment. However, their presence has been small compared with the truckload category, where there is far more freight to be booked.

5 ways to communicate sustainability beyond words
    GreenBiz.com
Melissa Wicinski and Jennifer Griffith write, "Gone are the days when we used only words to tell a great story. Today, especially when communicating sustainability, we rely more on the old saying 'a picture is worth a thousand words.' Please don't get us wrong; words, statistics and data measurements are crucial to sharing a company's focus on the triple-bottom-line, but we need to use more visual and compelling elements to truly portray a commitment to sustainability. That's the only way to break through. Furthermore, effectively communicating sustainability can be a key driver in positive organizational change."

Using fleet telematics to reduce fuel tax reporting
    By Bill Lockwood
Telematics is literally the combination of telecommunications and informatics. It utilizes GPS tracking and information technology to ensure efficient fleet management and is used extensively by companies such as Walmart and Verizon to manage their fleets. Along with the vehicle-tracking benefit of using telematics, its integration into data collection ensures the accurate reporting of information required in the trucking industry.

The way you prioritize suppliers may not be best method for mitigating risk
    SupplyChainBrain
The way suppliers are typically segmented may work well for prioritizing procurement resources on supplier selection, managing supplier performance, and supporting and developing strategic suppliers. But it doesn't always work well for prioritizing resources on risk management and compliance. Many B and C suppliers may be easily switched, but still represent large material risks to the company (such as litigation or regulatory fines).

Jordan Cohen: Stop telling your employees what to do
    Harvard Business Review
The idea of describing the outcome and letting a skilled professional determine how best to get there often results in a more committed worker, higher quality work, and a proud employee. This is also a very effective approach in getting the most out of knowledge workers. Describe the outcome you are trying to achieve, be clear on the requirements, and preserve the worker's autonomy. If the worker needs help, she will ask for it.

How UPS makes the business case for sustainability projects
    GreenBiz.com
When UPS adds new alternative fuel or advanced technology vehicles to its fleet, it doesn't simply choose just any alternative-fuel vehicle. The company only adopts new vehicles when they're proven to be economically viable, have a reliable fueling infrastructure, are readily available, provide fuel savings and are safe. The key to choosing new vehicles and potentially using them on a wider scale is data.

Ford details approach to supplier engagement and sustainability
    Supply Chain Digest
From a sourcing perspective, perhaps no industry with the possible exception of aerospace and defense is as complex as the automotive sector. There are often as many as eight to 10 layers between raw materials suppliers and the final OEM, and the auto sector is also deeply entwined with the also complex electronics industry supply chain, adding to the challenge.

    By Archita Datta Majumdar
Though it's not a new concept, the importance of reverse logistics is being more keenly felt in the last decade. Fluctuating economies and stiff global competition have made profit margins change while demanding more of service and quality than ever before.

Walmart's grand, green plans to reduce prices
    CNNMoney
Walmart has taken on a massive green project. CEO Mike Duke said, in 2009, that the retailer would build a sustainability index to track the environmental impact for the entire life cycle of every single product it sells. For many reasons, this has been a challenging process. But soon, consumers will be able to see the payoff, said Rosalind Brewer, CEO of Walmart's Sam's Club division at Fortune's Brainstorm Green Conference in Laguna Niguel, Calif.
