Can pre-rating each shipment in TMS before optimization run provide valuable insight into transportation performance?
Supply Chain Digest    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
A presentation by Ric Bush of Ryder at the JDA Software User Conference in Las Vegas raised an interesting question about the potential use and value of rating each individual shipment before it is optimized and then executed. The basic premise was this: By capturing what the rate would be for each shipment/order upfront as a standalone move, interesting and valuable analysis can be performed later to see what improvements were delivered via the optimization. Sustainability versus ROI: How to successfully achieve both
Environmental Leader    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
With the global population growing at a rate of 200,000 people a day, according to the World Bank Institute, there is an arduous strain on the world's resources, especially food, energy and materials. This increase in demand and resulting decrease in supply warrants a closer focus on sustainability efforts to renew the supplies being used. But as governments and businesses across the world have discovered, it's not easy being green. More

    Kansas City: Logistics powerhouse?
DC Velocity    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
It rests on America's logistics axis, the focal point for much of the nation's freight moving in any direction. It handles more rail tonnage than any city in the country and more rail cars than any city except Chicago. It is bisected by two major interstate highways: I-35 running north to south, and I-70 from east to west. Its airport handles more cargo than any facility covering a six-Midwestern-state radius other than O'Hare International Airport. Its bi-state, 18-county region boasts more road lane capacity than any of comparable size, which might explain why "rush hour" is a largely alien concept even though more than 2 million people call it home. It also serves up the meanest barbeque anywhere in creation. More

Supply chain planning linked to business growth
Material Handling & Logistics    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
With direct-to-customer and e-fulfillment representing 10 percent of all sales volume, and expectations that those methods will expand to 20 percent in the next few years, logistics managers must tap into expertise across their companies, not just supply chain. That's the premise of supply chain consultant Jim Tompkins' new white paper, Supply Chain Network Planning Transformed. "Most network studies are conducted by the supply chain group, which typically has little to do with setting business, marketing or sales strategy," he contends. "However, if these teams were part of the network planning group along with supply chain, then the focus could be changed from, 'How do we cut costs and deliver product?' to 'How do we grow our business profitably?'" While trend toward automation in the DC is undeniable, still 70 percent of DCs not automated
Distribution Digest    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Cliff Holste writes, "The deployment rate for automation in the DC appears to be strong in selected industry verticals like grocery, pharmaceutical, beverage, wine & spirits, electronics, and automotive parts. Likewise, DCs that support manufacturing operations tend to deploy various levels of automation technologies. Companies in these industries are driving the demand for automated distribution technologies such as product-to-person, AS/RS, automated case picking, and robotic mixed SKU palletizing." More

ISM non-manufacturing index down in April but growth patterns intact
Modern Materials Handling    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Even though overall activity showed a sequential decline for the second straight month, non-manufacturing activity remains on a solid growth path, according to the April edition of the Institute for Supply Management's Non-Manufacturing Report on Business. The index ISM uses to measure non-manufacturing growth — known as the NMI — was 53.5 in April, down 2.5 percent from March's 56.0 and down 3.8 percent from February's 57.3, which was the highest NMI reading since January 2011. Tom Andel: Let your pigs lead the way to lean
Material Flows    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Former Baltimore Ravens Coach Brian Billick hit a nerve with logistics professionals. As the first general session speaker at this year's Warehousing Education and Research Council conference, his role was to pump attendees up with leadership tips. The tip that got most attention was his recommendation to have the right balance of chickens and pigs on your team. You may have attended enough of these sessions to recognize this reference to the old breakfast-speaker joke about these animals' contribution to the menu of bacon and eggs. More
