MESSAGE FROM WERC
HOH Hiring Fair a great success
WERC and the Manufacturing Skill Standards Council co-sponsored a hiring fair conducted by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation and other partners on April 29. We are happy and proud to say that the results were positive: 166 job seekers from various branches of the military and 24 employers came together and 224 resumes were accepted, 32 interviews were conducted on site and five firm offers were extended. Best of luck to all the job seekers!

WERCouncil Events
  • May 16, Northern California WERCouncil Annual Symposium and OnTrac Tour, noon to 3 p.m.
  • May 22, Arizona WERCouncil Networking Mixer, 4 to 6 p.m.

  • Automation and innovation in the warehouse
    By Ken Ackerman
Full automation of materials handling in a warehouse exists only in the imagination of the technocrat. Just as the perfectly safe airplane is too heavy to fly, the fully automated warehouse is too expensive to buy and usually too risky to operate. An inverse correlation exists between mechanization and flexibility. There have been many instances of conveyor systems being sold for scrap because there was no resale market for this specialized equipment. Today, robotics and improved warehouse management systems are now enabling an increase in automation with systems that have reasonable flexibility.

How to hire more top performers
    Harvard Business Review
How much is your top salesperson worth? Your star engineer? Your best marketer? Everyone knows that some people get better results than others. But the best aren't just a little better than the rest — they're typically a lot better. Bain & Company's research, discussed here, suggests that top performers are roughly four times as productive as average performers. Sometimes the difference is far greater. For example, the best sales associate at Nordstrom sells at least eight times as much as the average sales associate at other department stores.

Look who's directing traffic in same-day supply chains
    Material Handling & Logistics
Same-day delivery is a popular subject in logistics circles. In fact it came up several times during the recent WERC Conference held in Chicago. Many of the discussions focused on the value and cost of this service to supply chains, but John Morris, senior managing director at commercial real-estate service firm Cushman & Wakefield, added a new angle: the value and cost of industrial real estate.

Generation gaps: Are we really that different?
    By Greg Witz
There are generalizations in the media about the generations in today's workplace. Countless articles focus on the differences between the generations and the conflict that can arise as a result. Indeed, it's a major problem with 75 percent of respondents in an Ernst & Young survey stating that leading a multigenerational workforce is a challenge. It's difficult to build relationships and support others when you focus on the differences. In this article, we wanted to take the opposite approach and examine the similarities between the generations.

    Risks with 100 percent probability
    By Dr. David Hillson
One of the first things I learned about risk was that every risk has both a probability less than 100 perfect as well as an impact on at least one objective. Some of my risk colleagues talked about risks with 100 percent probability, but I disagreed with them. As I've discovered more about risk, I've realized that my colleagues were right. There are risks with 100 percent probability of occurrence. In other words, they are either happening now or they are certain to happen in future.
