The hunt for the responsive, flexible warehouse
SupplyChainBrain    Share   Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Warehouses have been considered a necessary "evil" in the supply chain. In reality, they are a critical necessity in the global chain to fulfill customers all over the world. And done well, they can be an essential element to improving customer service. However, the challenges associated with warehouse design, as well as determining picking techniques and technology, are challenging. Fixed costs in everything from racks to conveyors, forklifts to directed picking systems, as well as employee training and productivity challenges, make warehouse management no child's play. More

9 avoidable workplace health, safety hazards
Inc.    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
You don't need to work surrounded by combustible materials to face serious health and safety risks, but the recent mine explosion in West Virginia, which killed nearly 30 workers, has called regulatory attention to that extreme end of the workplace hazard spectrum. Whether it's a failure to protect your workers against carbon monoxide, the silent killer, or a sleep-deprived employee getting into a fatal car accident on the drive to work, every job comes with potential hazards. Air cargo supply chain faces tough test as screening deadline nears
DC Velocity    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The air cargo supply chain's effort to screen all domestic cargo moving in the bellies of passenger planes comes to a head Aug. 1, when the industry will be required to show that each piece of cargo shipped in plane bellies is inspected before it is placed aboard an aircraft. The last step likely will be the most difficult. On May 1, the Transportation Security Administration, the federal agency in charge of managing the cargo security program, announced that the industry had met a key milestone by screening 75 percent of all belly cargo moving in U.S. commerce. The role of leadership in sales and operations/integrated business planning
HubPages    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
What is the difference between a sales and operations planning process that makes a modest difference in a company's operational and financial performance and an S&OP process that, year after year, enables a company to achieve its operational, business and strategic goals? You don't have to look beyond the senior leadership team for the answer. Sales and operations planning (also known as integrated business planning) is an executive management process for running the business. The focus of S&OP in the 1980s and 1990s (and still today for some companies) was a management process for aligning demand and supply at the aggregate level. More

Measuring sustainability for small and medium businesses: Is a single, national standard possible?
Triple Pundit    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Product certifications are everywhere. Walk into Whole Foods and you'll see packages labeled Fair Trade Certified, USDA Organic, Rainforest Alliance Certified — the list goes on and on. It can be challenging for consumers to understand exactly what these certifications mean for the products they choose to buy. The same could be said about sustainable business practices. More

Bloomberg    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Business activity in the U.S. expanded in May for an eighth-straight month, a sign manufacturing has yet to be affected by the turmoil in financial markets. The Institute for Supply Management-Chicago Inc. said May 28 its business barometer fell to 59.7 this month from 63.8 in April, which was the highest level in five years. Figures greater than 50 signal expansion. Rising sales and lean inventories are prompting companies to boost production and hiring, helping to broaden the economic recovery. More

Plugging the leaks at your loading dock
DC Velocity    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
If yours is a typical shipping operation, shipments probably aren't the only thing flowing out your dock doors each day. Chances are, money is too, in the form of air you've paid to heat or cool. The causes of the problem aren't hard to understand. With doors opening and closing all day long, loading docks represent a prime escape route for heated and cooled air. And those doors aren't the only area of vulnerability. Think of all the gaps between the dock door and the door of the truck that's parked there for loading or unloading. More

6 reasons to worry about China in your supply chain
AMR Research    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
If this sounds like China bashing, well — fair enough — it sort of is. But let's be clear before we start: The criticisms aren't leveled against the private-sector supply chain professionals who are transforming the Chinese economy. These folks may be building out the global supply chain of the future more than anyone else on earth. The problem is government and, specifically, the tilted playing field it dictates in what has become the world's most important engine of economic growth. More

At the request of several members of Congress, the Federal Trade Commission is further delaying enforcement of the Red Flags Rule through Dec. 31, while Congress considers legislation that would affect the scope of entities covered by the rule. May 28's announcement and the release of an Enforcement Policy Statement do not affect other federal agencies' enforcement of the original Nov. 1, 2008, deadline for institutions subject to their oversight to be in compliance.
