Protecting the supply chain against 4 common threats
    Supply Chain Digest
In recent years security concerns have become a serious issue for logistics companies. According to the U.S. Department of Commerce, employee theft now costs companies more than $40 billion a year. That is a huge number — and it's growing. Pardon the interruption
    By Bob Fortune
Avoiding random interruptions at work — whether in the field, office or warehouse — will greatly improve work flow and job performance, and reduce costly mistakes. Whether it is a text and subsequent response or setting one task aside to work on a second, output improves when one focuses on completing one task at a time well. Unfortunately, we live in a world where technology and others constantly are interfering with our thought processes.

Kroger DC puts the 'sewage' into clean energy
    Chain of Thought
David Blanchard writes, "The Kroger Co., by most measures the nation's biggest grocery retailer (measures that don't consider Walmart a pure grocery retailer, that is), has come up with one of the quirkiest twists on clean energy I've yet seen. Kroger is using a clean energy production system powered by garbage to provide power to one of its distribution centers."

    Collaboration bears fruit
    DC Velocity
You could call it a classic case of serendipity. Agricultural cooperative Ocean Spray had just hit a major milestone in its supply chain sustainability program when it received an unexpected proposal that promised to take its carbon reduction efforts to the next level. As part of a network redesign, the Massachusetts-based producer of fruit juice and food recently opened a new DC in Lakeland, Fla., to serve customers in the Southeast. By centralizing supply closer to clients, the company already has slashed millions of miles out of its distribution network, cutting both freight costs and carbon emissions.
