Women shattering logistics' glass ceiling

The year was 1990, and Diane Gibson, co-founder of startup Craters & Freighters, was working at her Denver headquarters when a sales representative from American Airlines walked in the office. Gibson recalls that the male sales rep asked, "Where are the bosses?" — a reference to Gibson's two male co-founders. "I bit my lip, held my tongue and told him, 'They'll be back shortly,'" she says with a laugh. Fast-forward two decades. Gibson's original partners are long gone, one leaving in 1994 in a dispute over the company's direction and the other bought out by Gibson in 1995 after he refused to agree to expand beyond Denver. A green supply chain starts with a promise, but needs verification too
Triple Pundit    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
In the past month, a number of large-scale products manufacturers (IBM, Ford, Intel, Procter & Gamble, Puma) and service providers (Kaiser Permanente) have issued sustainability focused supply chain related announcements. As noted by Green Advantages' Andrew Winston, a common theme of each of these mandates focuses on "transparency." Also, new reports have emerged that show companies are taking climate change programs to their respective supply bases as a means of supporting corporate responsibility reporting. More

For the third year in a row, Apple took first place in the Supply Chain Top 25, a ranking initiative conducted by AMR Research, a Gartner Inc. company. AMR Research has released a Supply Chain Top 25 report annually for the past six years, and this is the first time a company has been ranked No. 1 for three consecutive years. Finding a cure for counterfeit drugs: Technologies that combat vulnerabilities in the pharmaceutical supply chain
Pharmaceutical Processing    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Drug counterfeiting continues to increase, and likewise its global threat to patient safety continues to rise. The World Health Organization estimates that 1 million deaths occur from counterfeit malaria drugs every year. And while the United States' drug supply is one of the safest in the world, it is not immune to these concerns. Pharmaceutical manufacturers need to understand not only the different types of threats they face but also the tools and technologies available today to prevent counterfeit drugs from entering the supply chain. The automaker will use the data from the survey to create a broad-based carbon management approach for its supply chain. The 35 suppliers represent nearly 30 percent of Ford's $65 billion in annual procurement spending. The suppliers in the initial request include companies that make commodities like seats, steering systems, tires and metal components that have a large carbon footprint. More

Keeping orangutans out of the supply chain

Charles Darwin could have been speaking about business organizations when he noted that those who survive are those most responsive to change. He was speaking of animal and plant species, of course, but the metaphor is striking — organizations must be responsive and adapt just as species must adapt when situations and environments change. RFID Journal    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
GS1 Healthcare US's Secure Supply Chain Task Force has developed a pharmaceutical supply chain model as part of a program known as 2015 Readiness. The model is intended to prepare members of the U.S. pharmaceutical supply chain to use a standard serialized track-and-trace system (known as an electronic pedigree, or e-pedigree) related to the movements of pharmaceutical items. Since January, a group of 65 individuals representing 50 companies have been helping to craft a simulated supply chain that runs on software commonly used by businesses for Six Sigma processes to improve efficiency. Logistics news: Results from latest WERC DC measures study 2010
Supply Chain Digest    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
As usual, the 2010 DC Metrics report was released at the annual WERC conference in Anaheim, Calif. The respondents were roughly broken into thirds between companies over $1 billion in sales (31.9 percent), those between $100 million and $1 billion (30 percent), and those under $100 million (38.15 percent). That is probably a larger proportion of smaller companies than most supply chain surveys, and certainly it has an impact on the subsequent numbers. More

Lesson from the downturn: Cut inventory, not people
CFO    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Relying heavily on layoffs and wage reductions to cut costs during the past year, mid-size and small businesses missed a huge opportunity to generate cash out of improvements in inventory and working capital, a newly released survey suggests. The potential to cut costs by slashing inventory seems especially large among mid-size companies ($10 million to $500 million in revenue), according to a Greenwich Associates survey of 519 financial decision-makers from small and mid-size outfits. Why best pick is not your best forecasting option
SupplyChainBrain    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Demand forecasting has been the bane of suppliers, manufacturers and retailers for years. Considering the costly and detrimental consequences that poor forecasting can have on a business, it seems more companies would give this part of their supply chains more attention. But many don't. For some, it is guesswork at best. Demand forecasting is complicated and a number of challenges come into play. More
