Inventory management
Business Mirror    Share   Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
How well you manage your inventory can mean the difference between life and death to a company. Not having enough raw materials means not being able to manufacture what your customers are ordering, but keeping too much finished goods inventory when your customers don't need it results in a host of so many other problems. Keeping any kind of inventory, raw materials, work in process and finished goods has an associated cost with it. First is, of course, your cost of funds, which means that if you had borrowed money from the bank to fund your inventories, you are being charged an interest on your debt. More

Logistics Today    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Every time you turn around, it seems there's a new regulatory requirement. Governments around the world are updating customs codes, modernizing and introducing technology processes, and changing classifications — all in the name of streamlining revenue collection and enforcing supply chain security. The European Union has been and continues to be very active in promulgating legislation to support its drive to create a single customs union for its 27 member states. More

Sales up, jobs flat: World's executives confident but cautious
CEB Views    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Our business barometer has passed the "50" mark for the first time since we began the survey last year. With the needle pointing at 51, the world's business decision-makers are optimistic about a global recovery but still more cautious than some recent data suggest. What makes this optimism interesting is that their views are based not on "gut feeling" about the economy, but on what heads of sales, supply chain and HR are telling them. More

Study says companies aren't doing enough to track their environmental impacts
SupplyChainBrain    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Although green measurement is considered important, businesses on both sides of the Atlantic lack the correct systems to track their full environmental footprints, according to an independent study conducted for enterprise software vendor IFS in the United States, Scandinavia and the Benelux countries. As environmental regulation advances in both Europe and the U.S., businesses are facing increasing pressure from regulators, customers and investors to document and reduce their environmental impact. According to IFS, research data suggest that organizations need to make wholesale changes to their business technology to keep up with these rapidly advancing mandates. More

System checks Rx compliance via cell phone, RFID
Internet Evolution    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article

That can be dangerous; but doctors and family can know within hours, not days, because of a system that links the pill bottle to a cell phone and the Internet. The telemonitoring system, eMedonline, is being tested at Nyack Hospital in Nyack, N.Y., with patients recovering from congestive heart failure. More

"Nothing could be further from the truth." More

Observations from the AMR Supply Chain Executive Conference: The constant interplay between efficiency and effectiveness
The 21st Century Supply Chain    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
As always the AMR/Gartner conference, held recently in Phoenix, was well attended, informative and, believe it or not, a lot of fun. This year we had some of our sales organization attend, and that is always bad news for the marketing folks. We have neither the stamina for nor the practice of the late nights, let alone the will to refuse to participate. Before the meeting, we heard that the meeting was fully booked and that people were being turned away. I am usually sceptical when I hear this, but I have to say all the sessions were packed with many people standing at the back of the hall. More
