    3 secrets to successful leadership
    By Greg L. Alston
Good leadership is a curious thing. Lots of brilliant minds have tried to describe it, and lots of feeble minds have misunderstood it. The subject is made more difficult because people use words like charismatic, visionary and brilliant to describe some people who have been successful, while using words like autocratic, ruthless and stern to describe others with a history of success. Does personality define the leader, or is it something else? And how does someone travel from being inexperienced to becoming a good leader?

'Management Consultant' or 'Industry Expert' — Understanding different skill sets
    Supply Chain Digest
The terms "Management Consultant" and "Industry Expert" get tossed around a lot. However, they are not the same and knowing the difference is important. This is especially true in times when business and/or economic conditions drive companies to examine critical internal processes. Companies tend to reach out to advisers who can bring fresh ideas and up-to-date technologies. If a "cut-and-paste" approach would work, then it most likely would have already been tried.

Improve your warehouse by using what you already have
    By Ken Ackerman
The process of warehousing is essentially a management of space and time. We improve this process by optimizing the use of available space, and then developing ways to handle more material in less time. Other features can also be valuable, including improvement of housekeeping, reduction of damage and an enhancement of accuracy in shipping and receiving.

High temperatures put conveyor design to the test
    DC Velocity
Just about every kind of product you can imagine passes through warehouses and distribution centers. As a recent newsletter from custom conveyor and storage specialist Lauyans & Co. noted, that could be anything from nuclear waste to frozen chicken, to cite two of the products handled by the company's customers. Some of these applications can be so demanding and complex that a standard conveyor won't stand up to the task. A customized solution is required.

Could they do it if their lives depended on it?
    By Mel Kleiman
Do you have a hiring problem, a motivation problem or a training problem? To find out, ask yourself: "Could they do it if their lives depended upon it?" The "it" can be any set of desired behaviors. If the answer to that question is "yes," then you do not have a training problem — you have a motivation problem. Your employees already know how to do what is expected. If the answer to that question is "no," then you have either a hiring problem or a training problem. In that case, ask some follow-up questions.
