Battery changing room do's and don'ts
DC Velocity    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
KABOOM!!! That's the sound of an explosion, or perhaps of a 3,000-pound lead-acid battery hitting the floor — either way, it's something you definitely don't want to hear in your warehouse or DC. But that's a distinct possibility if your lift-truck battery changing room is improperly designed or managed. Not only can a poorly run battery room pose a safety threat, but it can also be a drain on productivity and your budget. A badly designed operation can lead to congestion and delays, improperly rotated batteries and costly fines for failure to comply with safety regulations. More

3 unique approaches to voice picking
Modern Materials Handling    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Order picking with voice is undergoing yet another transformation. Since its pioneering days in the 1990s, voice picking consisted of predominantly proprietary hardware and software solutions, such as those by Vocollect, using mobile computers embedded with speaker-dependent speech engines. Then in the early 2000s, vendors such as Voxware started moving away from proprietary hardware and shifted to more open architecture solutions that they embedded in commercial, off-the-shelf mobile computing devices such as those marketed by Motorola and LXE. AASHTO study: US transportation system is facing a crisis
@Risk    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials isn't mincing words. In its new report "Unlocking Freight," AASHTO says that the US freight transportation system is facing a crisis, and that the nation's highways, railroads, ports, waterways and airports require investments well beyond current levels to maintain — much less improve — their performance. Despite the fact that an increasing amount of freight is being moved by intermodal rail, the report estimates that trucks still carry 74 percent of the long-distance freight load. More

Tried and true strategies for combating supply price increases
Supply Chain Digest    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Although the global economic recovery is wobbling a bit, and there seems to be as much overall worry about deflation as there is inflation, clearly supplier prices have risen from the depths of the recession, and some materials and components have seen strong price increases in 2010 at a time when most companies still are having a hard time passing on those cost increases to their customers. What to do when a supplier comes in with a price increase announcement? The following are nine tried and true strategies. More

New markets for pharma bring supply chain worries
FiercePharma Manufacturing    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
With counterfeiting and theft in the news regularly, it's no wonder that management's worried about securing the supply chain. And now that so many drug companies are intent upon expanding globally, those security worries have stepped to the fore. That's one message from the annual UPS supply chain survey, which focused on supply chain managers in large health care and pharma companies. Almost half of them said their companies plan to expand into emerging countries in the next 18 months — and 40 percent said they're concerned about that move. That's a 22 percent increase above last year. More

Managed services are coming to RFID
Modern Materials Handling    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Cloud computing. Software as a service. Managed services. These have been among the hottest topics in information technology during the last year. They also have been some of the most exciting topics in information technology today, driven by all those Apple ads for apps for the iPhone and the iPad. All three terms refer to the same concept: turning over the day-to-day management of an application to a third party. Most of the buzz has been around supply chain software, but could managed services also be a new business model for RFID? More

On the rocky road to strong global culture
MIT Sloan Management Review    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
For more than a decade, multinational companies have been encouraged to create a strong global corporate culture through shared core values and practices. Building a global culture is hailed as a robust and flexible approach to dealing with the complexity and rapid changes these companies face. Indeed, several recent surveys of global executives all have identified the ability to maintain a common corporate culture as one of their greatest challenges and a top concern. However, research suggests that a strong global culture is the exception rather than the rule. More

Time to listen to the 'voice of the carrier'?
Supply Chain Digest    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Throughout the past decade, procurement professionals increasingly have advocated Voice of the Supplier programs in which companies regularly survey and interview members of their supply base to better understand how they can improve their own supply chain and procurement process. Should more shippers be taking a similar approach with their carrier bases? Yes, says John Gentile, a former transportation executive at Owens Corning who recently retired to start his own consulting firm. More

RFID in Fashion event goes virtual
RFID Journal    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
RFID Journal is transforming its RFID in Fashion conference and exhibition, previously planned for Aug. 12 and 13 in New York City, into a virtual event to be held Sept. 28. The speakers will focus on educating apparel suppliers about how to tag individual items. "Interest in radio frequency identification is rising in the sector, but given the continued economic challenges facing retailers and apparel, footwear and accessory manufacturers, we feel a virtual event better serves the needs of our readers," says Mark Roberti, RFID Journal's founder and editor.
