  • You don't have to be road kill in the logistics capacity race
    Chain of Thought
The recently released annual state of logistics report gave voice to what many shippers and carriers are already feeling: Ouch. It's getting harder to find the capacity and talent to move shipments for rates that fit existing budgets. The laws of supply and demand say that the drivers remaining on the road can therefore command more pay and carriers can up their rates 5 to 8 percent. That leaves it up to shippers to be more creative in how they get transportation for rates they can afford. And that in turn offers 3PLs an opportunity to leverage technology to meet that rising demand.

Making hard decisions: When leaders should say yes and no
    By Scott Steinberg
Self-help gurus and motivational speakers worldwide will tell you that "yes" is an empowering word, and indeed it is. "Yes" opens doors and breaks down barriers. "Yes" gets people to step outside of their comfort zone and try new things that help open their minds to new philosophies and perspectives. But "no" is also a powerful word, and one that we all need to employ more in both our personal and professional lives. Here are a few reasons should you get to know it better.

Improve your warehouse by using what you already have
    By Ken Ackerman
The process of warehousing is essentially a management of space and time. We improve this process by optimizing the use of available space, and then developing ways to handle more material in less time. Other features can also be valuable, including improvement of housekeeping, reduction of damage and an enhancement of accuracy in shipping and receiving.

Developing dashboards: The right data for warehouse managers
    By Ken Ackerman
Like the dashboard on your car, your business system should be designed to provide the essential information that warehouse managers must have in order to know exactly how their operation is performing. But many systems are "data rich, information poor," also known as DRIP. Because so much information is available on contemporary warehouse management systems, some managers cannot resist the temptation to put far more metrics in a warehouse dashboard then you will find in the dashboard on your car.

One of retail's most challenging goals has been providing practical solutions for building store-specific mixed SKU unit loads. The challenge for the DC becomes even more difficult when trying to build mixed SKU loads that are also optimized by aisle and product location within the aisle. It has been estimated that when combined with specific pallet building rules there are over a million different combinations of variables that can come into play.
