Handling, warehouse ergonomics: A cart is just a cart, right?
Modern Materials Handling    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Bob Trebilcock writes, "'Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar.' That famous phrase may or may not have been uttered by Sigmund Freud. Regardless of the author, over the years it's come to mean that how a thing is used can have multiple interpretations. Or not. So what does Freud have to do with materials handling you might wonder? Fair question. One of the things I've always found fascinating about the materials handling industry is how seemingly ordinary things can enable extraordinary gains in productivity." More

U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano was in Brazil recently talking supply chain partnership with the American Chamber of Commerce in Sao Paulo. "As our countries and societies become more connected and dependent upon shared systems of transportation, commerce and communications, we must work together to address shared threats," she said. "We continue to collaborate with our international partners to strengthen aviation security and the global supply chain, and facilitate legal travel and trade, which are critical to our economy." How leaders become self-aware
Harvard Business Review    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
A plethora of people, courses, and self-help guides profess to lead you by the hand to the promised land of business success. The problem is that things are always messier than the how-to's make them out to be. This is why it is often better to consider less the specifics and more the principles and qualities that bring success. More

Automation: Materials handling continues to innovate
Modern Materials Handling    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Bob Trebilcock writes, "When I began writing about technology in the late '90s, warehouse management systems and software were all the rage. The unleashing of the Internet in 2000 exacerbated that trend, as companies rushed to bring their technology systems up to snuff to take advantage of the web. That period was followed by a tremendous amount of interest in data collection technologies, spurred on by RFID and voice recognition. Automation during that period was mostly focused on speeds and feeds. How fast was your conveyor? How many cartons could your sorter sort?" More

The basics of battery recycling
DC Velocity    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
No lift truck battery lasts forever. No matter how carefully monitored or well maintained a battery may be, there comes a time when it's best to call it quits. But when this costly piece of equipment has reached the end of its useful life, what should you do with it? Industrial batteries contain materials that could potentially harm people, facilities, and the environment if not properly handled. So you can't simply put a used battery out with the trash. Nor can you burn it or chop it up like a discarded wooden pallet. More

Leadership, innovation and the future
Management-Issues    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The next wave of great innovative ideas won't come from environments in which leaders control and micromanage employees. Innovation thrives only in organizations whose members are free to think and openly express themselves. And environments where members can freely confront the status quo are cultured through the behavior of their leaders. More

The era of collaboration
DC Velocity    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
We are hearing snatches of conversation that sound like the days of peace and love may be with us once again. Be assured that neither of us will be publicly disrobing à la Broadway's 1968 hit musical "Hair" in the interest of making a statement one way or another. And there are signs of something less than the magic of Woodstock in the air as well. As for what all this means for buyers of supply chain services and providers of the same, after a few years of beating one another's brains out, two strategic courses have emerged. Perhaps only one is forward looking and strategic, and the other is facing the past and, at best, tactical. More

How Dell turned bamboo and mushrooms into environmentally friendly packaging
MIT Sloan Management Review    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Sustainability as a domain is moving in the direction of "materiality" — information that is relevant or "material" from the point of view of stakeholders and investors. And Dell, the computer and technology company, is working to make itself well-positioned to make the link between its initiatives and outcomes. More

Bert Moore: A bar code user's best friend
Material Flows    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Tom Andel writes, "Bar codes have become a business basic. That's what worried Bert Moore. He was instrumental in demystifying the technology in its early years. His concern was that maybe he and his colleagues did too good a job. 'The trouble is, the people who were educated about bar code technology 20 years ago have moved up/on/out and the newer people think they know everything, but they often have only a cursory understanding of the technology, standards and applications,' he told me for an MH&L year-end wrap up back in December 2010. Today I'm feeling a little of the worry that Bert felt, along with a lot of sadness. We just learned that Bert passed away recently after a heart attack while battling lymphoma." More
