Supply chain contemplates post-recession future
DC Velocity    Share   Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The bombardment is over, or at least it has abated. Shell-shocked logistics executives have emerged from their foxholes to face a future that they can only hope is better than the recent past. The recession has left indelible scars on the supply chain. No one with two digits to their age is likely to recall a decline so swift and severe. Few would doubt that the industry is now in recovery mode, but fear still trumps optimism. More

Why selection of shipping cartons should be a supply chain professional's responsibility
Kane is Able via SupplyChainBrain    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Designing or selecting shipping cases can be complex. One difficulty is that so many parties want to be involved. Marketing, manufacturing, quality, advertising, engineering, packaging and logistics all want input, as do some suppliers and customers. Consumer product manufacturers tend to view packaging as a marketing function. Industrial firms usually assign the process to an engineer who may not have packaging experience. Some companies simply turn the whole process over to their supplier of corrugated containers. More

FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
A redesign of a company's distribution network might not seem like a high priority during a severe recession. But recent research by Saddle Creek Corp., a 3PL service provider, and DC Velocity, found that many companies modified their networks as a result of the downturn. The research showed that two-thirds of the survey's 265 respondents had made changes to their distribution network design because of the recession. Transportation-related changes topped the list, followed by shifts in warehouse size or configuration and consolidation of shipments from suppliers. More

Plastic pallets 101
Modern Materials Handling    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
"Plastics!" If you're old enough to remember "The Graduate," plastics was the one-word piece of career advice offered to Dustin Hoffman after college graduation. Things may not be quite that dramatic in the pallet industry: wood is still by far the material of choice for pallets by most shippers. The last time Modern Materials Handling surveyed its readers, fewer than 9 percent were using plastic pallets. But the interest in plastic pallets clearly is growing. More

Pallets 101: Iron man, or what you need to know about metal pallets
Modern Materials Handling    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Metal pallets made from steel or aluminum might not be as common as plastic pallets, but in some applications, they have real advantages, especially for companies that take a long-term approach to their assets. "When you're looking at a steel pallet, you're talking about customers who have a heavy payload and are looking for something that is rackable, fireproof and sanitary," says Don Pulver, vice president and general manager for Worthington Steelpac, a manufacturer of steel pallets.
