Rethinking jobs in the automation age
    Supply Chain Digest
Most people understand that the economic health of an industrialized country depends on its ability to provide jobs for everyone that wants/needs a job. Based on government statistics, at any point in time about 3 percent of the adult population has some type of disability that prevents them from performing most basic job-related tasks. Unfortunately, they must depend on entitlements, welfare programs, and charity to get along. This 3 percent factor is considered to be normal, and is therefore built-in to the economy.

Taking the long view of sustainability
    DC Velocity
Out in Minneapolis, you might note on approaching Murphy Warehouse Co.'s distribution centers that the landscaping looks a little different from what you might see at other industrial sites — a mix of native prairie grasses rather than a green lawn. That's the first sign of the many steps the company has taken to conserve resources and invest in sustainability.

7 ways to be a more effective team leader
    By Liz Murphy
What makes a team successful? If we're talking about the bottom line, a successful team meets and/or exceeds key performance metrics that further short- and long-term organizational goals. But getting your team to perform on paper has less to do with numbers than you might think, and more to do with being an emotionally intelligent and intuitive leader. The external success of a team comes from within, and while it's a lot of work, it can also be very rewarding.

Today's complex global supply chains are poised to be dismantled
    GigaOM
Supply chains today are big, complex and global. Keeping them humming is an enormous challenge. But does it have to be that way? We think the world is entering the era of small, simple and local supply chains, powered by a new generation of manufacturing technologies such as 3-D printing, intelligent assembly robotics and open-source hardware — also known as the software defined supply chain.

5 ways leaders earn respect from their employees
    Forbes
As the workplace evolves to become more trustworthy, transparent, ethical, collaborative and mindful of its employee needs — leaders must be equally diligent to earn respect from their colleagues. Being the leader doesn’t mean that you have earned respect. Too many leaders take their titles and authority for granted. Some leaders believe that they are owed and/or command some level of respect just because of where they are positioned on the organizational chart. Today’s workplace — highly influenced by millennials and embedded with people that have trouble trusting others — requires proof of performance before respect is earned. As such, leaders must reset their state of mind and become more responsible with their actions and accountable for the effect their influence has on their employees and the organization as a whole.

    Connect, then lead
    Harvard Business Review
Niccolò Machiavelli pondered that timeless conundrum 500 years ago and hedged his bets. "It may be answered that one should wish to be both," he acknowledged, "but because it is difficult to unite them in one person, it is much safer to be feared than loved." Now behavioral science is weighing in with research showing that Machiavelli had it partly right.
