Go short: Study says annual rebidding of truckload contracts will save shippers money over multiyear agreements
DC Velocity    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Since the recession hit, truckload carriers have tried to push their shippers into one-year contracts rather than locking them in for two, three, or more years at a time. For the carriers, the reasoning was simple. With their costs rapidly escalating, they wanted the flexibility to change rates and contract terms on short notice and not be saddled with static multiyear pricing that lagged behind their dynamic expense structures. But short-term contracts might not just benefit the carriers. More

Shipping pallets: The science behind unit load design
Modern Materials Handling    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Bob Trebilcock writes, "For the past five or six years, Mark White, president of White and Company and a professor emeritus at Virginia Tech, has been preaching the benefits of a systems-based approach to unit load design. White's idea, as I've written in the past, is that pallets, industrial packaging and materials handling systems are too often designed in a vacuum. The folks designing pallets never talk to the packaging engineers, the systems engineers or transportation people who are shipping a product. The result: the money saved by designing the conveyor system a certain way may be lost many times over in extra pallet and packaging expenditures." More

The best leaders care about their status more than their power
Forbes    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
In a series of five experiments, Steven Blader, a management professor at New York University's Stern School of Business, and Ya-Ru Chen, a management professor at Cornell, demonstrate that it is status in the workplace, rather than power that motivates people to act fairly. "In other words," says Blader, "although power and status are often thought of as two sides of the same coin, they in fact have opposite effects on the fairness of people's behavior." More

RFID Journal    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
When Scott Meyer, the owner of Village Uniform and Linen, joined his father's family business in 1996, to help grow the firm's industrial laundry division, he began experimenting with a radio frequency identification solution to manage the sorting of piles and bags full of uniforms, mats and linens. The resulting solution, which he developed with assistance from RFID company Datamars — a Swiss RFID firm with a U.S. office in Woburn, Mass. — has helped Village Uniform grow its industrial business. Meyer is now marketing the system, known as Simple Sort, to other laundry and cleaning companies worldwide. More

Despite the extensive supply chain damage Japanese automakers experienced as a result of last year's earthquake and tsunami in Japan and flooding in Thailand in the autumn, Honda still is projecting a net profit at 470 billion yen ($5.99 billion) on sales of 10.3 trillion yen ($131.27 billion) for the fiscal year to March 2013. "Strong sales of new models as well as a strong recovery from the supply chain disruption caused by the [natural disasters] contributed to a significant increase in profit in Japan and North America automobile operations," the automaker said in a statement.
