Special report: The state of logistics in the US
Material Handling & Logistics    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The economic recovery will continue to sputter along weakly for the next three years. If you secure trucking services on a transactional basis, you can be assured that sometime soon you will not be able to get a truck. In the face of tightening trucking capacity, rail intermodal is seeing a massive resurgence. Shippers are turning more to warehouse-based third-party logistics providers to provide intermodal and other logistics management expertise previously associated with non-asset-based 3PLs. More

DC productivity improvement opportunities abound in older operations
Supply Chain Digest    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Maintaining a high level of productivity in older DCs is a never-ending challenge for operations managers. Over time order fulfillment operations such as receiving, stock put-away, picking, and shipping can become routine. The prevailing wisdom is: "If it's not broken, don't fix it." However, that should not preclude eliminating or reducing systemic inefficiencies that impact on productivity. The following are often-overlooked ways to increase efficiency and productivity in an existing DC without making equipment or major process changes. More

6 ways to get more from your fleet management software
DC Velocity    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Forklift fleet management software provides a wealth of information that helps companies optimize lift truck safety, productivity, maintenance, and operating costs. Most solutions fall into one of two camps: those that track vehicles' and drivers' activities, and those that track maintenance and repair activities and costs. They range from relatively simple spreadsheets to sophisticated systems that remotely monitor lift trucks' inner workings. Some are sold on a stand-alone basis for a monthly per-truck fee by independent developers, while others are provided by forklift manufacturers and dealers as part of a fleet management or maintenance contract. 3PL users renewing contracts less often
Material Handling & Logistics    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Globally, but especially in Europe, the number of 3PL users not renewing more than half of their contracts has increased considerably since the last time Eyefortransport conducted its "3PL Selection & Contracts Renewal" study in 2009. While 73 percent of 3PL users renew more than half of their 3PL contracts, 83 percent did so in 2009. In other words, over a quarter of users did not renew more than half of their contracts in 2012, as opposed to just under a sixth in 2009. The biggest reason that users do not renew existing contracts is due to cost "creep." More

Environmental Leader    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Corporate sustainability has been a hot topic for years now. Although no designated governing body or regulated standards exist, countless companies have initiated environmentally responsible changes within their organizations. 4 tips to an effective employee review
American Express OPEN Forum    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Last year Craig Anderson threw out the template employee review forms and developed a new process. Assessments are now based on four factors: tasks done well, tasks to be improved on, performance on set goals and planned goals for the future. Anderson says his employees appreciate the simplified process. Another bonus: a newly created electronic employee performance file. Every time Anderson thinks of a performance issue (good or bad), he writes a quick email to himself and deposits it in the file. Come review time, the file doubles as a memory refresher. The following are a few things to consider as you develop your own employee review process. More

Planning it forward

Earlier this year, one of the truckers in Kimberly-Clark's carrier base went out of business. But the personal and health-care products giant wasn't caught flat-footed. Kimberly-Clark was able to swiftly analyze the ramifications for its distribution network by using special software. "We modeled the impact [of the carrier's exit], including how much incremental capacity we needed to acquire from our other carriers," says Tim Zoppa, transportation center of excellence manager at Kimberly-Clark. The link between quietness and productivity
Fast Company    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Sometimes people forget that the most productive people in an organization aren't the ones who make the most noise. In fact, it's often the quiet ones who out-produce everyone else, according to Roberta Matuson, CEO of Human Resource Solutions. Here are some reasons Matuson thinks this is so. More

10 reasons winners keep winning — aside from skill
Harvard Business Review    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Rosabeth Moss Kanter writes, "Whether the game involves competing every four years in the Olympics or every day in a business, winning brings advantages that make it easier to keep winning. To understand sustainable success, I compared perpetual winners with long-term losers in professional and amateur sports and then matched the findings to business case studies for my book 'Confidence.'"
