GAO: National freight plan needs to address congestion
Truckinginfo
Truck and rail traffic are expected to grow, good news for the economy as well as the carriers, but the benefits are not without drawbacks. With growth comes congestion, particularly in cities, and transportation planners need more information and better direction from Congress on how to manage the problem. That's the message from the Government Accountability Office, in response to a request by Sen. John Walsh, D-Mont., for an assessment of national freight flows and their impact on congestion.

Management by asking good questions
Ken Ackerman
The concept of "management by wandering around," or MBWA, was created by David Packard of Hewlett-Packard. He believed that the best managers do not spend the majority of their time behind their desks; rather, they move around the factories and warehouses, talking to those working there, learning about their problems and ideas. Packard was convinced that the best leaders are those who recognize the importance of talking to the troops. He also recognized the importance of listening, discovering opportunities by hearing and considering the ideas of his workers and managers.

PECO: When is a pallet not a pallet?
Supply Chain Managment Review
Pallets could be the ultimate supply chain commodity. Many users buy strictly on price, and will change suppliers to save a nickel — or about $25 a load. Steering transportation management strategies
Inbound Logistics
Cost, capacity, customer service. These are the three Cs that keep shippers up at night. How companies prioritize one over another depends on the type of product they're moving, their customer base and how they manage transportation. As rates rise, truck drivers grow scarce, and capacity runs short, shippers have limited recourse, and have to be smart about how they set transportation strategy.

The perfect storm for supply chain costs
CFO
For many companies, 2015 is looking rosy. The overall economy is finally accelerating out of the worst recession since the 1930s, helped in no small part by construction as the Construction Backlog Indicator reached an all-time high in June. But the recent rise in consumer spending has fueled inflation speculation, foreshadowing an inventory carrying cost upswing in the form of rising short-term borrowing rates.
