Hours-of-Service rules back as top concern in annual trucking industry survey

The American Transportation Research Institute, the trucking industry's not-for-profit research institute, recently unveiled its list of the top 10 critical issues facing the North American trucking industry. Operational impacts being experienced across the supply chain from the changes to the Hours-of-Service rules that went into effect in 2013 once again propelled the HOS rules to the top of the list in ATRI's annual survey of more than 4,000 trucking industry stakeholders.

US industrial manufacturers forecast solid growth

Optimism regarding projected company revenue growth increased among U.S. industrial manufacturers during the third quarter of 2014, according to the Q3 2014 Manufacturing Barometer, released by PwC U.S. Survey respondents forecast an average growth rate of 5.6 percent over the next 12 months, up from 5.2 percent in the second quarter and 4.2 percent a year ago.

Transportation and warehousing sector failed to join September's job-creation party

While the U.S. nonfarm labor force grew significantly in September over August's numbers, transportation and warehousing was largely left on the sidelines, in what could be another sign that the sector is having trouble attracting qualified workers. About 4,644 transportation and warehousing workers were added to the nation's nonfarm payrolls in September, a 1.9 percent increase from the prior month's figures, according to monthly data released by the Department of Labor.

But procurement functions often don't take this important step, according to Martin Berr-Sorokin, general manager at IBM Supplier Lifecycle Management Solutions. UPS acquires i-parcel to strengthen e-commerce market position

United Parcel Service Inc. announced that it had acquired i-parcel, which will enhance UPS' ability in cross-border deliveries from the U.S. and U.K. to more than 100 countries. According to UPS, the acquisition complements its existing capabilities; however, the financial details of the acquisition have not yet been disclosed.
