  • Understanding the root cause of system-generated shipping delays
Distribution Digest    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Cliff Holste writes, "I have been involved in a number of DC system assessments over the years and found that it is a common belief among DC operations managers that shipping delays are often the result of an insufficient amount of accumulation conveyor between picking, sorting and shipping. It's easy to understand how they arrive at this opinion after observing the system in operation and noticing how frequently alert signals are being triggered by full-line backups. In addition to being annoying, system productivity and throughput capacity are taking a major hit, and even worse many shipments are being delayed and we know how quickly that can turn ugly." More

Modern Materials Handling    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
World demand for protective packaging is forecast to increase 6.3 percent per year to $24.5 billion in 2016, according to a new report titled World Protective Packaging, a new study from The Freedonia Group Inc., a Cleveland-based industry market research firm. Factors contributing to rising demand include an acceleration in global manufacturing output, increased consumer spending on packaged goods worldwide, and demographic trends such as increasing urban populations, as urban residents tend to consume more packaged goods than their rural counterparts. 5 must-have features in a YMS
DC Velocity    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Do you have a trailer logjam outside your distribution center that's slowing down operations? Are you using the trailers parked in your yard for overflow storage? Are you unable to quickly pinpoint which trailer has the goods that must be unloaded right away to fill an urgent order? If you answered yes to any of these questions, then it's time to consider buying a yard management system, a type of software that, as its name implies, helps users manage the trailers outside the distribution center. Material Handling & Logistics    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Labor is often the fattest target when converting to a lean manufacturing environment. Sometimes the best opportunities for efficiency come before and after production. Here are examples from both ends. More

3 lessons for a greener and more profitable supply chain
Forbes    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
What do three leading chemical, automobile, and software companies have in common? All three — Honda, BASF and SAP — are looking to curb risks and take advantage of opportunities across their global supply chains. They're doing so by measuring their greenhouse gas emissions not just in their operations but up and down their value chains. Many other multinationals are heading in the same direction. More

Norwegian recycler tracks empty cans, bottles
RFID Journal    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Norsk Resirk, a nonprofit Norwegian company that processes discarded plastic bottles and aluminum cans, has completed the first phase of a plan to utilize passive ultrahigh-frequency RFID tags and readers to improve its management of recyclable materials. Initially, the firm is reading RFID labels attached to plastic bags containing the recyclables at one of its plants. The long-term goal, however, is much more ambitious: to have the tags read by bottle- and can-collection sites at the point at which the bags are filled, interrogated again by truck drivers transporting those bags, and finally read a third time at all three of Norsk Resirk's plants. Do your employees make you a better manager?
Harvard Business Review    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Successful leaders and managers alike constantly stress the importance of developing their employees. But do they appropriately recognize the importance of how their employees might develop them? One of the world's top coaches thinks not. While chatting about "coachability" with Sir Clive Woodward — who had coached Great Britain's world champion rugby Lions and served as Director of Elite Performance for the wildly overachieving British Olympic team — he casually observed that, in reality, the best athletes he had invariably improved his abilities as a coach. A 'Vancouver' by any other name
DC Velocity    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
As most of the world sees it, if you are called "Vancouver," you are either in Canada or you're nowhere. It's a perception that Curtis Shuck, director of economic development and facilities at the Port of Vancouver in the United States, combats every day. Never mind that it is Washington state's third largest seaport after Seattle and Tacoma. Or that it celebrates its centennial this year. Vancouver U.S. still suffers from comparisons with its neighbor to the north. More
