How many supply chains do you need?
Supply Chain Digest    Share   Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Is it time to start chopping your supply chain up? Perhaps so. If you have been paying much attention to the latest supply chain thinking, you may have noticed that there is a lot of emphasis lately on "segmenting supply chains," or some related concept. What does that mean? Pretty simply, it means that a company rarely has just a single supply chain — even though it may think it does. Rather, a company has multiple supply chains based on a variety of mostly customer-driven factors, and that supply chain organizations must define and execute those different supply chains in different ways, logically enough. Hyster Company recently announced that its lift trucks ranked No. 1 in the United States for customer perception of total cost of ownership, ahead of all full-line lift truck manufacturers. The annual independent survey, conducted by Peerless Media Research, gauges the most important attributes that customers evaluate for lift truck purchases and which brands lead in these key factors. "Being recognized by the marketplace as the lift truck provider with lowest total cost of operations is proof positive that Hyster Company delivers true value to its customers," said Jonathan Dawley, president of Hyster Company distribution. Making automated palletizing work in distribution
Material Handling & Logistics    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The growth of e-tail order fulfillment is making automated palletizing a more viable option in the distribution center. This technology does well where there are known carton sizes and known trucks that those cartons have to hit. The need to lower transportation costs is another factor. Those needs can be fulfilled when this technology is combined with good upstream and downstream communications. More

Gaining a new understanding of risk
MIT Sloan Management Review    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
In these days of uncertain markets — and an uncertain economy — risk can seem almost omnipresent in business. But how do you manage risk prudently yet still grow your company? More

Reducing carbon footprints in the supply chain
Sustainable Industries    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
In many ways, a company is only as green as its supply chain. But how in the world do you control that? Not an easy question to answer, but a good place to start would be measuring the footprint of your supply chain as it currently stands. After all, what gets measured can be managed. Anyone who has looked at life cycle analysis knows that the interconnections and interdependencies between companies and the many entities that they, their suppliers, and their employees interact with ultimately extend to the vanishing point. This infinity factor makes it virtually impossible to compute the footprint exactly, though "reasonable approximations" can certainly be made. More

3PL Survey: What keeps you up at night?
Modern Materials Handling    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Fuel prices are going through the roof. Customers that once valued long-term relationships are now low-cost shoppers. And an economic recovery long stuck in neutral might be shifting into reverse. So what keeps the CEOs at some of the world's largest 3PLs up at night? What do they think are their most significant problems? That was one of the questions posed to 3PL CEOs in North America, Europe and Asia as part of the 18th 3PL Provider CEO Perspective, a survey conducted by Robert Lieb, a professor of supply chain management at Northeastern University, Kristin Lieb, assistant professor of marketing at Emerson College, and Joseph Gallick, senior vice president of sales for Penske Logistics. New allegations of abusive DC conditions in import DCs in Los Angeles area run by Schneider Logistics for Wal-Mart
Supply Chain Digest    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Just a few weeks ago, Amazon.com found itself embroiled in a mini-scandal when workers in an Allentown, Pa., distribution center went to the media with claims of brutally hot working conditions and labor standards that were impossible to meet. Amazon issued an apology of sorts, and said it had spent $2.4 million "urgently" installing new air conditioning systems at the Allentown DC and three others. Now, on the heels of that incident, a small group of workers at a Wal-Mart import DC being run by Schneider Logistics have filed a class action lawsuit for what workers say are abusive conditions. 3 leadership skills that count
Harvard Business Review    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Morten T. Hansen writes, "How do you lead successfully in an uncertain, disruptive, even chaotic world? In our new book 'Great by Choice,' Jim Collins and I pondered that question. To get some empirically derived answers, we studied leaders of companies that grew to become great in highly uncertain, even chaotic, industries. They include the biotech, semiconductor, personal computer, and airline industries. Over the years, the CEOs of these companies faced massive technology disruptions, deep industry recessions, sudden collapses in demand, price wars, oil shocks — you name it. But even so, they led their companies to great long-term financial performance. Their experience can guide leaders who now must lead in today's disruptive world." More

FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
American Thermal Instruments plans to launch pilots with six global companies in order to test its new RFID-enabled data logger. The testing will enable the firms to record temperatures using a smartphone's built-in Near Field Communication RFID reader, through a product's box, as the goods are shipped through the supply chain. The six participants, to be selected from the logistics, pharmaceuticals, retail and manufacturing sectors, will employ the new data logger to track vaccines, flowers, fruits, vegetables, wine and other products. Why small manufacturers lag in 'green' efforts
The Wall Street Journal    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Many manufacturers are eager to go green, but doing so is particularly tough for smaller firms. Fifty-seven percent of small manufacturers said they have little or no strategy to become sustainable, compared to 39 percent of larger manufacturers, according to a recent survey by the Manufacturing Performance Institute, an industry-research and strategy firm in Shaker Heights, Ohio. The study was commissioned by the American Small Manufacturers Coalition. More

Advantech's Infotainment Terminal supports multiple RFID applications
RFID Journal    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Taiwanese computer manufacturer Advantech is leveraging passive RFID at its recently released HIT series of infotainment terminals that are being employed within health care settings throughout the United States, Europe and Asia, as well as by college students in Singapore. Because the terminals — which feature a touch screen, an Intel processor and Wi-Fi network functionality — are available with an RFID interrogator that can read passive 13.56 MHz tags, Advantech envisions them being used in a much wider set of applications that could enable users to pay for products and services. PwC finds companies aren't reporting on risks
@Risk    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
New research from PwC reveals some disturbing details which suggest that most companies aren't necessarily providing investors with a complete view of the strategic opportunities and threats to the business. Even though there's considerable uncertainty in global markets these days, PwC's new study showed that less than half (45 percent) of the 350 largest listed U.K. companies clearly explain the potential impact of the risks they have identified or how they intend to buffer their effects. The best approach to training
Harvard Business Review    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
How many times have you trained a junior colleague, new hire, or summer intern in a task only to have that person come knocking on your door every five minutes with a different question about some key detail? Let me ask you a different question. Do you remember sitting in your physics, or chemistry, or calculus class in high school or college and watching the teacher do a problem on the board? Do you remember being able to solve a problem on your own if the new problem was just like the old one? Do you remember not being able to solve a new problem if it was not just like the old one? New sustainability plan by Sainsbury's is aggressive, promises more involvement with suppliers' businesses
The Green Supply Chain    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
U.K. grocer Sainsbury's recently announced an aggressive new sustainability program that promises to achieve 20 environment goals by 2020, and aims to get there in part by more direct interaction with its supply base. The retail says its "20 by 20 Sustainability Plan" comes "at exactly the right time for Sainsbury's. One only has to pick up the daily newspapers to see the challenges facing our society, economy and planet to understand why," saying that "capacity to provide food is threatened by climate change, water scarcity and unsustainable farming practices." The economic effects of the budget crisis and how to respond to it
The 21st Century Supply Chain    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The current budget crisis in the U.S. and Europe has been building for decades, but can be traced back to the same root cause: governments living beyond their means. Just as people who choose a lifestyle beyond what they can actually afford, governments in the developed world have been living beyond their means for decades. Just like individuals who eventually "hit the wall," some governments now also have hit the wall (Greece), or find themselves under a microscope (U.S.) after years of profligate spending. What does this mean for the business environment going forward? More
