How do you make logistics cool for young people? That really seems to be the question of the year — maybe of the decade — for the industry, especially as baby boomers retire from the workforce, the economy begins to bounce back after a long stretch of languid-at-best growth, and many (most?) young people turn up their noses at the thought of working in a warehouse or driving a truck.

Top causes of absenteeism and how to fix them
    By Joy Burgess
Companies expect employees to use some sick days from time to time. Life happens, and family issues, injuries and sickness will interfere with the work schedule of a company's employees. However, excessive absences can quickly become costly for employers. Even a single sick day may reduce productivity, but when absenteeism becomes an extensive problem, the effects may negatively affect the morale, productivity and finances of a company.

Are you hiring order-takers or high-performers?
    By Deborah Wipf
A robot only takes orders. It receives commands and completes the tasks as specified. It can't really think for itself; it can only do what it's been programmed to do. Does that sound a bit too close to what some of your employees do? Do you distribute tasks and receive reports back when each is completed? Is that really all you want in a team member? Most leaders would prefer high-performing team members who look beyond the day-to-day to-do lists and consider the larger picture.

Critical skills for being a great leader
    Bradenton Herald
It is amazing that so many people think of themselves as great leaders but do not demonstrate leadership qualities. Being an owner or a boss does not make you a leader, as true leadership is not about the position you hold but the attributes you display. People follow leaders because they want to, not because they have to.

Do you know these employee recruiting fundamentals?
    By Mel Kleiman
The tools, technologies and techniques we use to attract potential employees keep evolving, but a great recruiting program is still all about basic "blocking and tackling." For starters, if you only recruit when you have a job opening, you cannot get the best. Waiting to recruit until you need someone is like grocery shopping when you're hungry — you'll buy the first thing that looks good that you can open and eat right away. Feeling pressured to hire someone causes you to be less selective and, more often than not, results in a poor hiring decision.

Consumers who buy merchandise online oftentimes return all or part of their orders, and when they do, they expect that transaction to be a breeze. Free shipping, preprinted labels, instant return authorizations, and the option to return e-commerce merchandise to brick-and-mortar stores have become mandatory for e-tailers if they expect to stay in the game.

Supply chains benefit from adoption of 2-D matrix code technology
    Supply Chain Digest
Ease of installation and a high cost-to-benefit ratio are driving a rapid expansion for data matrix codes throughout the supply chain. A rapidly growing number of retail packages sport them, and whole market sectors like pharmaceuticals are also making extensive use of 2-D codes. As usage grows, the knowledge base for material handling system integrators will continue growing, making it easier for companies to install systems and begin reaping the benefits of data matrix coding.
