Are companies increasing workplace risk when hiring temporary workers?
Distribution Digest
Share

We are now in the busiest sales period of the year for order fulfillment centers. For many companies the end of the year peak can be three times or more the average. Even in the most efficient and mechanized distribution centers, there are still lots of manual tasks to be performed and companies typically double or triple their workforce for the last 100 days or so of the year. That adds up to a lot of temporary "hands on deck" and an increased risk for work-related injuries.

While East Coast businesses get up after Hurricane Sandy's smash-down, they'll be nursing pain that demands healing. The bigger pains are bound to be supply chain related. Smart companies will learn from Sandy.

For many companies, truck loading and unloading is one of the last frontiers of automation. Consider the case of Frito-Lay. By the mid-'90s, the snack food giant had long since automated operations inside its distribution centers. But when it came to loading trucks, the company still relied on manual processes, with workers spending their days inside trailers hand stacking cases of chips, nuts, cookies, crackers, and meats.

Following the testing of an RFID-enabled temperature-tracking device built into a shipping container, Southwest Airlines Cargo (Southwest Airlines' cargo services branch) has approved the device to be used by shippers on its aircraft. The solution is intended to provide data regarding the environmental conditions within a Cold Chain Technologies container of temperature-sensitive goods, such as vaccines or drugs, measured and recorded throughout the flight via an Intelleflex battery-assisted passive RFID sensor.

Mindfulness helps you become a better leader
Harvard Business Review

Bill George writes, "Ever since the financial crisis of 2008, I have sensed from many leaders that they want to do a better job of leading in accordance with their personal values. The crisis exposed the fallacies of measuring success in monetary terms and left many leaders with a deep feeling of unease that they were being pulled away from what I call their True North. As markets rose and bonus pools grew, it was all too easy to celebrate the rising tide of wealth without examining the process that created it."
