Supply chains need to be more resilient as disruptions are widespread
Business Continuity Institute via SupplyChainBrain    Share   Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The sources of supply chain failure are deeply rooted, says a survey from the Business Continuity Institute. Respondents from 62 countries revealed that 85 percent of organizations recorded at least one supply chain disruption in 2011 with 40 percent of analyzed disruption originating below the immediate supplier. The survey, now in its third year, emphasizes the need for a higher priority to be assigned to developing resilient supply chains in the face of systemic vulnerabilities and unpredictable disruptive events. Inventory management and planning tops the list of 10 issues that keep supply chain leaders awake at night, a survey by consultancy Crimson & Co has revealed. The survey of 300 senior decision-makers from more than 200 companies, highlighted the pressures resulting from the continued economic downturn, along with a combined desire to squeeze every last drop of cost and cash out of the supply chain while supporting revenue growth, largely in emerging markets. Suppliers should rely on consumption-based forecasting
ChainLink Research    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
In retail, the supplier often takes most of the demand risk. The retailer wants accurate forecasts to reduce inventory carrying costs and improve yields, but they don't have the same level of skin in the game that suppliers do, if demand doesn't materialize. The supplier usually is the one who has to pay for markdowns, spoilage, returns and junking. Suppliers can successfully fill every customer order and still "lose their shirt." More

Buyers find transition to outsourcing a challenge
Supply Management    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Buyers are struggling to make the transition to outsourcing a success, according to a recent KPMG survey. The study found that buyers are showing renewed interest in shared services as a means to complement or supplant traditional outsourcing. Disappointment with underachieving outsourcing efforts, changing economics and a desire for greater control over strategic processes and sensitive data were cited as reasons. The report said purchasers continue to face challenges in managing outsourcing transition processes and their efforts are hampered by a lack of skilled resources and inadequate planning and procedures. Top 5 steps to insuring your supply chain
Supply Chain Digital    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The events of 2011 — including the Arab spring protests, the Sendai earthquake and tsunami and now, the Thailand floods — have caused supply chain disruptions to 85 percent of businesses. Insurance coverage for supply chain disruptions is typically found in property insurance policies, which usually contain Contingent Business Interruption coverage. CBI covers your company's losses due to damage suffered by either your suppliers or your customers. Despite the importance of this coverage in our global economy, policyholders often do not focus on it. More

The supply chain of the 21st century
Supply & Demand Chain    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
There is great value in harnessing the power of supply chain ecosystems to drive growth and efficiency in a business. Applying ecosystem principles helps businesses create and master this "chain of chains" that envelops the multi-enterprise scope of the company's suppliers and customers to function as one synchronized unit. The supply chain, as it currently exists for most companies, is a linear function of buy, sell, ship and pay. However, technological advances and communication innovations over the last 40 years have increased the complexity, opportunity and benefits associated with effective supply chains. More

    US trucking index increases
IFW    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The U.S. Freight Transport Research's Trucking Conditions Index increased by 3.1 points in September bringing the total reading to 9.2. But the FTR warned that while this marks the eighth straight month of improvements, the TCI is still well below the 13.3 peak in March. Readings above 10 are a signal that volumes, prices and margin are sitting in a good range for trucking companies. More

The Associated Press via Bloomberg Businessweek    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Manufacturing growth slowed in October from September, a troubling sign that factories are struggling in the weak economy. The Institute for Supply Management says its manufacturing index dropped to 50.8, down from 51.6 in September. Measures of production and exports fell and a gauge of employment dipped. On a positive note, survey respondents say raw materials prices fell sharply. More

Will disappearing trucks lead to supply chain failures?
American Shipper via SupplyChainBrain    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The commercial truck scarcity predicted for the past two years is starting to become reality, forcing shippers to rethink how to keep their supply networks functioning smoothly. U.S. truck capacity is so tight that analysts and trucking executives are warning of serious shortages at the slightest sign of improvement in the economy. "Sometime in 2012 there is a reasonable probability of sporadic supply chain failures based on capacity," freight industry economist Noël Perry recently said at the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals' annual conference in Philadelphia. Thailand floods: Mother Nature defies the technology supply chain
Forbes    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The truth of current supply chains in information technology is that we've entered a world in which components are increasingly globally sourced. This can be advantageous in terms of costs and should be advantageous in terms of supply chain robustness via the benefits that come from multisourcing. When correctly balanced, this yields an optimal cost/risk tradeoff — with reductions in both when compared to a local sourcing model. But sometimes even the most robust chains are damaged, as Mother Nature has so defiantly proven recently in Thailand. More
