Do warehouses still need 8-hour work shifts?

Not long ago, the typical warehouse operated eight hours per day and five days per week. That was a normal business schedule, and nobody expected warehousing to be any different. Today, many distribution operations operate with a 24/7 schedule, and warehouses that work only 40 hours are increasingly rare. Most of our ideas about scheduling people in distribution centers are monuments to the short two centuries of our industrial age. Yet, for most of human history, eight-hour work schedules were not common at all.
New facility achieves compact footprint with automatic palletizers

Barcel USA, is a growing manufacturer in the bakery and snack food markets. When designing a new plant in Coppell, Texas, the company included a fully integrated palletizing system. Five new high-level palletizers have helped the company automate palletizing, stretch wrapping and transportation to storage.
Operational since December 2013, the new facility was designed to require minimal warehouse space for the new end-of-line packaging equipment.

One in 3 retailers are bringing forward last order dates this Christmas, according to research from Manhattan Associates, which warns that customers who leave their shopping till later could be in for a surprise this year. Fifty-seven percent of shoppers surveyed said they would be more confident in pushing their Christmas shopping to later this winter.
