With Order Fulfillment, "Perfection" is in the Eye of the Beholder
DC Velocity    Share   Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
How can a supplier tell if it is performing to a customer's expectations? One way would be to calculate the order's score on the Warehousing Education and Research Council's Perfect Order Index (POI). To calculate a POI score, you simply multiply the four key "perfect order" metrics together: percentage delivered on time, percentage shipped completem percentage shipped damage free, and percentage shipped with correct documentation. Manufacturing Expands in November
Modern Distribution Management    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The manufacturing sector expanded in November for the fourth month, according to the latest Manufacturing ISM Report on Business. The rate of growth however slowed. The PMI was at 53.6 percent. New orders and production remained at positive levels, and the prices index fell 10 points, indicating less inflationary pressure on manufacturers' costs. Respondents to the survey showed concern about the lower value of the U.S. dollar, but did note increased capital construction and a "steady increase in business." More

University Researchers Say RFID's Worth is Proven when Deployed Enterprise-wide
RFID Journal    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
A study written by four university professors finds that radio frequency identification (RFID) offers a significant benefit to companies that fully deploy the technology across their entire business operations or supply chain. However, the study also finds that while RFID is gaining momentum when it comes to automating businesses' operational and management functions, few firms have reached the "transformational" stage at which RFID is deployed across multiple operations and departments within a company, as well as across its partners. Only when businesses fully employ the technology across their own operations and those of their partners, the study's authors maintain, can RFID provide them with a true competitive advantage. More

Credit Trends Show Optimism Despite Demand Lags
Material Handling Management    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Sales for the credit and collection sectors are rising rapidly, according to the credit managers' index (CMI), a monthly survey conducted by the National Association of Credit Management (NACM). The CMI jumped from 51.1 to 55, and credit applications and dollar collections also increased. NACM also reports fewer disputes and rejections of credit applications as well as a smaller number of accounts placed for collection. The data suggest that businesses are working to get financial affairs in order in anticipation of better economic times. More

Green Logistics: White House Emissions Reduction Targets in Line with Senate Legislation
Supply Chain Management Review    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
With the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen coming up on December 9, the White House recently rolled out its U.S. emissions target, which, like House and Senate legislation introduced earlier this year, could have a pronounced impact on freight transportation and logistics operations and costs. The White House target calls for the U.S. to reduce emissions in the range of 17 percent below 2005 levels in 2020 and an 83 percent reduction by 2050, as well as to be ultimately in line with final U.S. energy and climate legislation. The Senate version calls for a 20 percent reduction below 2005 levels, and the House version calls for a 17 percent reduction below 2005 levels. Both bills --like the White House version -- call for an 83 percent reduction by 2050. More

"Managed Services" Offer Shortcut for Software Users
DC Velocity    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Software applications are often referred to as "tools," and just as with any tool -- say, a hammer or table saw -- you have to use them properly to get good results. Although it's relatively quick to teach someone how to wield a hammer, that's not the case with most software applications. Sure, the vendor may provide support in the form of classes or training, but the user still has to spend time learning how to use the software. But in recent years, a few supply chain software vendors have begun offering clients another option for using their applications -- a service in which the vendor runs its application on the customer's behalf for a fee. These arrangements are known as "managed services," a term that comes from the IT sector, where this has been common practice for years. More

Asset-Oriented Supply Chains Need Supply Chain Network Optimization More Than Ever
Supply Chain Digest    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Changing market and supply chain dynamics are causing companies across many sectors to rethink existing supply chain network strategies, but the imperative to do so is especially high for many manufacturers with asset-oriented supply chains. That's one of the conclusions from a new research note by analysts Kimberly Knickle and Simon Ellis from IDC’s Manufacturing Insights. Asset-intensive supply chains are most commonly found in manufacturing-centric enterprises in process (e.g., chemicals, oil/gas, paper, metals) and "hybrid" (e.g., consumer packaged goods, food/beverage) industry sectors. In the linked article, Knickle and Ellis note several important trends driving the need for asset-intensive supply chains to relook at their network strategies. More
